In this guide, we’ll show you how you can seamlessly plan and book this unique combination with Trek Africa Gorillas, your trusted travel partner for tailor-made safaris in Uganda and Tanzania.

Why Gorilla Trekking in Uganda is a Must-Do Experience

Gorilla trekking is one of the most unforgettable activities you can do while visiting Uganda. This unique adventure allows you to encounter endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Uganda is home to two national parks that offer gorilla trekking experiences:

1. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
2. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

These parks are among the only four locations in the world where you can see mountain gorillas. The other parks include Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In Bwindi, gorilla trekking is conducted in four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo, each offering different trekking experiences and habituated gorilla families. Mgahinga is an excellent option for those looking to combine gorilla trekking with golden monkey tracking.

Why Tanzania is the Perfect Safari Destination

Located in East Africa, Tanzania is a safari lover’s paradise. It is renowned for its diverse wildlife, beautiful landscapes and iconic attractions, including:

• The Serengeti National Park: Famous for the Great Migration and incredible wildlife viewing.
• Ngorongoro Conservation Area: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera teeming with wildlife.
• Lake Manyara National Park: Known for tree-climbing lions and lush landscapes.
• Tarangire National Park: Famous for its massive elephant herds.
• Mount Kilimanjaro: The tallest mountain in Africa and a bucket-list destination for trekkers.

Most safari activities in Tanzania take place in the northern circuit, making it an ideal addition to your gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda.

This journey offers scenic views and an authentic East African experience. If you choose this option, Trek Africa Gorillas can guide you and help plan your road trip.

How Much Does Gorilla Trekking in Uganda Cost?

• USD 800 per person for Foreign Non-Residents.
• USD 700 for Foreign Residents.
• UGX 300,000 (around USD80) for East African Citizens.

A gorilla permit allows you to spend one hour with a mountain gorilla family once they’re found during your trek.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking and Safari in Tanzania

The dry months of January, February, June, July, August and early September are the best time to combine gorilla trekking in Uganda with a safari in Tanzania. During these months, the trails are less muddy, vegetation is less dense and wildlife viewing is more accessible.

For the Serengeti, these months also coincide with the Great Migration, offering incredible opportunities to witness thousands of wildebeest and zebras crossing the plains.

What to Wear for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Planning for gorilla trekking in Uganda and wondering what to wear? Here’s a detailed list of what to pack to ensure you’re comfortable and well-prepared for your adventure in the jungle:

1. Long-Sleeved Sweater or Jacket

Gorilla trekking takes place in cool, misty forests, so you’ll need a warm layer to keep you comfortable, especially during the early morning hours.

2. Two Pairs of Long Trousers

Long trousers are essential for protecting your legs from insect bites, thorns and branches as you navigate through the forest.

3. Waterproof Hiking Boots

A sturdy pair of waterproof hiking boots is a must. The terrain in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga National Park can be steep, muddy and slippery.

4. Raincoat or Poncho

Since gorilla trekking occurs in a rainforest, rain can fall unexpectedly, even during the dry season. Carry a lightweight, waterproof raincoat or poncho to stay dry.

5. Gardening Gloves

These will protect your hands when you hold onto trees, branches or vines for support during the trek.

6. Hat and Sunglasses (Optional)

Depending on the weather, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can help protect you from the sun. However, they’re optional and not always necessary.

7. Bug Repellent

Insects, including mosquitoes, are common in the forest. Use a good mosquito repellent to protect your skin from bites.

8. Sunscreen (Optional)

If you’re trekking during sunny weather, sunscreen will protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

9. Neutral-Colored Clothing

Avoid bright colors, as they can startle the gorillas. Also, steer clear of black and blue clothing, which attract tsetse flies. Neutral, earthy tones like khaki, green and brown are ideal.

10. Binoculars

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to a variety of bird species and other wildlife. A pair of binoculars will enhance your birdwatching and wildlife experience.

11. Camera and Extra Batteries

Capture your unforgettable moments with a camera. Make sure you bring extra batteries and keep your flash off to avoid disturbing the gorillas.

By dressing appropriately, you’ll not only be more comfortable but also ensure that your gorilla trekking experience is smooth and enjoyable.
