In this article, we’ll guide you through how you can combine these two incredible experiences into one seamless trip and how Trek Africa Gorillas can help you plan and book the perfect combo of gorilla trekking in Uganda and a Namibia safari.

Why Choose Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking is one of the top experiences to have when visiting Uganda. This exciting adventure offers you the chance to track the endangered mountain gorillas in the lush, biodiverse forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, both located in the southwestern part of Uganda. These are two of only four national parks globally where you can see mountain gorillas, the others being Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the DRC.

Why Visit Namibia?

Namibia, often referred to as the land of sand, is one of Africa’s most unique and stunning destinations. With vast, untouched landscapes and low population density, it’s a dream for nature lovers. Namibia’s Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world, stretches along the coastline and far inland, providing breathtaking views and unmatched serenity. The country also boasts national parks that protect its coastline, offering opportunities to see incredible wildlife. Namibia is considered one of the best safari destinations in Africa, offering a perfect balance of desert landscapes, wildlife and adventure.

This permit grants you one hour of close interaction with the mountain gorillas once you find them during your trek.

How to Book Gorilla Trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda? The first step to securing your trek is to book a gorilla permit. This is essential to confirm your participation in Uganda’s famous gorilla trekking experience.

How to Purchase Your Gorilla Permit

Gorilla permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and can be purchased at their headquarters in Kampala or Kisoro. If you’re arriving in Uganda via Entebbe, it’s recommended that you buy your permit in Kampala. However, if you’re arriving through Kigali, Rwanda, you can purchase your permit directly from the UWA branch in Kisoro, which is just 1-2 hours away from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

At Trek Africa Gorillas, we make the process easy. Once you confirm your travel dates, simply send them to us via email or WhatsApp. We will tentatively reserve your permits online and send you an invoice for payment. Once we receive your payment, we’ll immediately secure your gorilla permits and send you scanned copies for your records, confirming that your gorilla trekking experience is booked.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

The best time to trek gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is during the drier months: January, February, June, July, August and early September. These months offer easier access to the park and clearer views of the gorillas, as the vegetation is less dense compared to the rainy season.

What to Wear for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Wondering what to wear on your gorilla trekking adventure? Here’s a helpful list of essentials to ensure a comfortable and safe trek:

Long-sleeve sweater: The forest can be chilly, especially in the mornings.
2 pairs of long trousers: Protects you from the cold and rough terrain.
Waterproof hiking boots: A must for muddy trails.
Hat and sunglasses: Optional but useful, depending on the weather.
Camera with long-lasting batteries: Capture those unforgettable moments but remember to keep your flash off to avoid disturbing the gorillas.
Binoculars: Perfect for spotting birds and other wildlife in the forest.
Gardening gloves: These will help you hold onto branches and trees during your trek.
Raincoat: Since Bwindi is a rainforest, the weather can change quickly. Be prepared for unexpected rain.
Mosquito repellent: The forest is home to various insects, so it’s good to carry some repellent or wear it.
Sunscreen: While it can get chilly in the morning, the midday sun can be strong, so protect your skin.

Also, remember to avoid wearing bright colors, as they can startle the gorillas and black or blue clothing, which attracts Tsetse flies. Opt for neutral colors for the best experience.

Where to Stay During Your Gorilla Trekking Adventure

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is divided into four trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Each sector offers a variety of accommodation options close to the trekking starting points.

Rushaga Sector: Stay at Rushaga Gorilla Camp, Four Gorillas Lodge, Gorilla Safari Lodge or Icumbi Gorilla Safari Lodge.
Nkuringo Sector: Popular lodges include Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge and Lake Mutanda Resort.
Buhoma Sector: Options include Buhoma Lodge, Bwindi Lodge and Buhoma Community Rest Camp.
Ruhija Sector: Consider staying at Trekkers Tavern Cottages, Agandi Eco Lodge or Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge.

These accommodations are conveniently located near the trekking starting points, making it easier for you to begin your gorilla trek the following morning.
