About Buhoma Sector

Buhoma, located in the northern part of Bwindi, holds the distinction of being the first sector to be habituated in 1993. It is the most famous and most visited area in the park, home to the Mubare family, which is the oldest gorilla family, along with three other families:

• Habinyanja Family
• Rushegura Family
• Katwe Family

Buhoma sector is particularly popular for its easy access and rich history. It is where gorilla trekking first began in Bwindi, giving it a sense of prestige and confidence for travelers. The sector also boasts the only two lodges inside Bwindi Forest:

• Gorilla Sanctuary Forest Camp
• Bwindi Lodge

These lodges provide a unique experience for trekkers, nestled within the dense forest. Buhoma attracts many visitors due to its status as the most famous sector, with a high number of gorilla families and luxury accommodation options. This makes it a prime destination, especially during peak seasons when permits are highly sought after.

Why Choose Buhoma?

• Home to four gorilla families, including the Mubare family
• The most famous and historic sector in Bwindi
• Best choice for those seeking luxury accommodations
• More easily accessible for travelers arriving from Uganda or Rwanda

Ruhija is located in the eastern part of Bwindi, offering a more peaceful and tranquil environment. This sector is home to four gorilla families:

• Bitukura Family
• Mukiza Family
• Kyaguriro Family
• Oruzogo Family

These families are available for tracking year-round. Ruhija stands at an elevation of over 2,350 meters above sea level, making it the coldest area in the park.

In addition to gorilla trekking, Ruhija is ideal for those looking to combine their experience with nature walks or hiking. Rwamunyonyi Peak, a popular hiking trail, offers stunning views of the surrounding area. Ruhija also provides a great alternative for travelers who wish to visit Bwindi during the busy months when permits in Buhoma might be sold out.

Why Choose Ruhija?

• Home to four gorilla families
• Cooler temperatures, ideal for trekkers who prefer a mild climate
• Offers hiking opportunities like Rwamunyonyi Peak

Comfortable Travel to Buhoma or Ruhija

Getting to Buhoma or Ruhija can be a long journey but there are ways to make it more comfortable.

• By Road: If you’re traveling by car, a 4×4 Land Cruiser is ideal for the rugged roads leading to both sectors. The drive from Entebbe/Kampala to Buhoma is about 8-9 hours, while from Kampala to Ruhija is roughly the same.
• By Air: For a quicker and more comfortable option, you can take a flight to Kihihi Airstrip, which is only about 1 hour from Buhoma. Scheduled flights are available from Entebbe or Kampala and you can arrange a transfer to your lodge upon arrival.

What to Wear for Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is an adventure and the right clothing and gear will make your experience more comfortable. Here’s a recommended list of essentials:

• Long-sleeve shirt/sweater: Temperatures can get chilly, especially in the morning.
• 2 pairs of long trousers: It’s good to have a backup in case one gets wet.
• Waterproof hiking boots: These will help you navigate the muddy, slippery trails.
• Hat and sunglasses: Optional, depending on the weather.
• Cameras & extra batteries: Don’t forget your camera to capture the unforgettable moments but remember to turn off the flash!
• Binoculars: Perfect for spotting the diverse wildlife, including birds and other primates.
• Gardening gloves: Useful for holding onto trees or branches during the trek.
• Rain jacket: Bwindi is a rainforest and rain is unpredictable, so always be prepared!
• Mosquito repellent: Protect yourself from bugs during your trek.
• Sunscreen: To protect against sunburns on hot days.

When choosing your clothes, avoid wearing bright colors as they may scare off the gorillas. Black and blue are also not recommended as they attract Tsetse flies. Neutral colors like brown or green are ideal.

Best Time to Plan Your Gorilla Trekking Tour

Gorilla trekking in Buhoma and Ruhija is available year-round but the best months to visit are during the drier seasons:

• June to August
• December to February

During these months, rainfall is lower and the trails are less slippery, making it easier to trek. However, if you plan to travel during the rainy season (March to May and November), expect heavier rainfall. Some lodges may offer discounted rates during these months, so it can be a good option for budget-conscious travelers.
