Comparing Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Congo

Comparing Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Congo: Which Destination is Right for You?

Are you dreaming of a gorilla trekking adventure in Africa but unsure whether Uganda or the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is the best choice? Gorilla trekking in Africa is a unique experience available only in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo, home to the last remaining mountain gorillas in the world. Congo also offers the opportunity to see the rare Eastern Lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Despite the cost and physical effort required, witnessing these majestic apes in their natural habitat is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Let’s compare gorilla trekking in Uganda and Congo to help you make an informed decision.

1. Cost of Gorilla Permits: Uganda vs. Congo

The cost of gorilla permits varies significantly between Uganda and Congo, making it an important factor to consider.

• Uganda:
  • Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person per trek
  • Residents: $700 per person
  • East African Citizens: (UGX 300,000) per person

In Uganda, permits allow you to spend one unforgettable hour with mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

• Congo:
  • High Season: $400 per person
  • Low Season: $200 per person
  • Eastern Lowland Gorilla Permit (Kahuzi-Biega): $400 for foreign visitors, $200 for East African residents and $20 for Congolese nationals

Congo offers a budget-friendly option, especially during the low season, as part of its strategy to attract more tourists after years of instability.

2. Accessibility and Travel Logistics

Travel convenience can greatly impact your overall experience.

• Uganda: While the drive from Entebbe International Airport to Bwindi takes 9-10 hours, there’s now an easier option. Many travelers fly into Kigali, Rwanda and drive about 4-5 hours to Bwindi. The East African Tourist Visa allows seamless travel between Uganda and Rwanda, making this a practical and cost-effective route.
• Congo: Accessing gorilla trekking destinations in Congo, like Virunga National Park, requires flying into Goma and often involves additional permits and security clearances. The infrastructure and logistics in Congo are less developed than in Uganda, which might make travel slightly more challenging.

3. Accommodation Options in Uganda and Congo

Both Uganda and Congo offer accommodations to suit various budgets, from luxury lodges to more affordable options.

• Uganda: Bwindi and Mgahinga have a wide range of lodges, from $30 budget stays to luxurious options like Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp and Buhoma Lodge, priced between $500 and $1,000 per night.
• Congo: While there are fewer options in Congo, there are still comfortable lodges available, such as Mikeno Lodge in Virunga National Park or budget-friendly options priced between $50 and $150 per night.

4. Gorilla Families and Trekking Experience

• Uganda: With 20 habituated gorilla families in Bwindi, Uganda offers a more flexible experience. Daily, up to 160 permits are available, making it easier to secure a booking. Additionally, Uganda offers a unique Gorilla Habituation Experience, where you can spend up to 4 hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family. This special experience costs $1,500 and is exclusive to Bwindi.
• Congo: Congo has 8 habituated gorilla families in Virunga National Park and 2 in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. While the trekking experience is similar to Uganda, Congo provides the unique opportunity to observe Eastern Lowland Gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega, a species not found in Uganda.

5. Trekking Difficulty and Distance

The physical challenge of trekking depends on the specific gorilla family you are assigned.

• In both Uganda and Congo, families are allocated based on your fitness level and preferences. If you prefer a shorter trek, let the park authorities know in advance. However, since gorillas are wild animals, their movements can affect the trek’s duration regardless of your assigned group.

6. Safety and Security Considerations

• Uganda: Uganda is considered one of the safest countries for gorilla trekking, with well-established tourism infrastructure and security measures in place. The roads, accommodations and park facilities are reliable.
• Congo: While Congo offers incredible experiences, its political instability has raised safety concerns. Virunga National Park, in particular, has faced security issues in the past. Travelers are advised to check the latest travel advisories and use reputable tour operators for their trips.

7. Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Congo

Both Uganda and Congo offer gorilla trekking year-round but the best months are during the dry seasons:

• Best Time: June to August and December to February (less rainfall, easier trekking conditions)
• Wet Season: March to May and November (heavier rainfall but discounts on accommodations and permits may be available)
