Comparing Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda: Which Destination is Right for You?
Planning to visit Africa for a gorilla trekking adventure? If you’re trying to decide between Uganda and Rwanda, you’re in the right place. Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, offering travelers the chance to encounter the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Both Uganda and Rwanda host some of the best gorilla trekking experiences but there are differences that could help you choose the destination that’s best for you. Here’s a detailed comparison to guide your decision.
1. Cost of Gorilla Trekking Permits: Uganda vs. Rwanda
Uganda
- Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person
- Residents: $700 per person
- East African Citizens: $80 (UGX 300,000)
Rwanda
- Foreign Non-Residents: $1,500 per person
- Residents: $500 per person
- East African Citizens: $200
Gorilla trekking in Uganda is significantly more affordable compared to Rwanda. Uganda markets itself as an affordable destination, while Rwanda positions itself as a luxury experience. Despite the price difference, the trekking experience and the time spent with the gorillas (one hour) are the same in both countries.
2. Accessibility and Travel Routes
Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is just a 2-3 hour drive from Kigali International Airport, making it the most accessible option. It’s even possible to do a one-day gorilla trek in Rwanda.
Uganda
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda is a 9-10 hour drive from Entebbe International Airport. However, an alternative is flying into Kigali, Rwanda and driving to Bwindi in about 4-5 hours. This route is increasingly popular, especially for travelers with limited time, as it allows you to take advantage of Uganda’s affordable gorilla trekking permits while using the East African Tourist Visa to visit both countries.
3. Accommodation Options: Budget to Luxury
Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park is home to some of the most luxurious lodges in Africa, such as Bisate Lodge and Singita Kwitonda Lodge, which are renowned for their world-class amenities and services.
Uganda
Bwindi has a variety of accommodations to suit all budgets. You’ll find options ranging from $30 to $100 per night, making it an excellent choice for budget travelers.
4. Gorilla Families and Permit Availability
Uganda
- Gorilla Families: 20 habituated families in Bwindi, offering 160 daily permits.
- Unique Experience: Uganda also offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience, where visitors can spend 4 hours with a semi-habituated gorilla group. This costs $1,500 per person.
Rwanda
- Gorilla Families: 12 habituated families in Volcanoes National Park, offering 96 daily permits.
Uganda’s larger number of gorilla families makes it easier to secure a permit, especially during peak seasons.
5. The Gorilla Trekking Experience: What to Expect
The trekking experience in both countries is similar, with a 98% chance of seeing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The length and difficulty of the trek depend on the gorilla group you’re assigned to.
Uganda offers a wider range of trekking options, from short and easy hikes to longer, more challenging ones. You can request a group based on your fitness level.
Rwanda’s gorilla groups are generally easier to access, with shorter treks, which may appeal to travelers looking for a less physically demanding experience.
6. Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda
Gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda is possible year-round. However, the dry seasons (June to August and December to February) are the best times to visit, as the trails are less slippery. If you visit during the rainy seasons (March to May and November), you may enjoy discounts at some lodges but the trekking conditions may be more challenging.
7. Unique Experiences Exclusive to Each Country
- Uganda: The Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi is a standout activity, offering more time with the gorillas.
- Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park provides a seamless, luxury gorilla trekking experience, perfect for travelers seeking high-end accommodations and convenience.
