Discover the Magic of Serengeti National Park on Safari

Serengeti National Park is one of Tanzania’s most iconic destinations. As the oldest and one of the largest national parks in the country, it’s famous for hosting the Great Wildebeest Migration and housing an incredible diversity of wildlife. From majestic lions to vast herds of wildebeests, zebras and giraffes, Serengeti offers an unforgettable safari experience.

What to See on a Serengeti Safari

The Great Wildebeest Migration: Nature’s Spectacular Journey

Witness the awe-inspiring Great Migration, one of nature’s most dramatic events. Every year, over 1.5 million wildebeests and thousands of zebras travel from the southern Serengeti plains and Ngorongoro Crater to Kenya’s Masai Mara in search of water and fresh grazing. The journey is perilous, with predators like lions, cheetahs and hyenas lying in wait. August and September are the best months to catch river crossings, while late October marks the return journey to Serengeti as the rains begin in Tanzania.

Diverse Wildlife You Can Expect

Serengeti National Park is home to an incredible variety of habitats, including grasslands, savannas, woodlands and riverine forests. These ecosystems support a rich diversity of wildlife, including:

• Big Cats: Lions, leopards and cheetahs.
• Herbivores: Elephants, giraffes, zebras, gazelles and buffaloes.
• Unique Species: Servals, jackals, aardwolves and rock hyraxes.
• Birds: Over 500 species, including ostriches, secretary birds and black eagles.

The Big Five Safari Experience

Serengeti is one of the few places in Africa where you can spot the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffaloes. For an even closer experience, you can opt for a walking safari to explore the park’s wildlife on foot.

Wildebeest Calving Season: A Photographer’s Dream

Visit during late January to early February to witness the wildebeest birthing season. Around 8,000 calves are born daily during this period, making it a prime time for dramatic predator-prey interactions and breathtaking photography opportunities.

Best Time to Visit Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti offers incredible wildlife viewing year-round but the best times depend on your interests:

• July to October: Ideal for the Great Migration and dry-season game viewing.
• January to February: Perfect for witnessing the wildebeest calving season.
• March to May: A quieter time with lush landscapes and fewer crowds but expect some rain.
