Everything You Need to Know About Gorilla Permits in Africa

If you’re planning a gorilla trekking adventure, understanding what’s included in a gorilla permit, how to book one and the overall cost is essential. Below is a detailed guide to help you prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

What Does a Gorilla Permit Include?

A gorilla permit covers the following:

1. Park Entrance Fee: Access to the national park where the trekking takes place.
2. Guided Trekking Experience: Professional park rangers who guide and assist you throughout the trek.
3. Conservation Contribution: About 20% of the permit fee supports local community projects that discourage hunting in the forests, indirectly protecting mountain gorillas.

Gorilla permits act as identification documents with unique booking numbers issued by wildlife authorities. These confirm your authorization to access specific national parks for gorilla trekking.

• Uganda: Issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
• Rwanda: Managed by the Rwanda Development Board.
• Congo: Provided by Virunga National Park.

How Many Gorilla Permits Are Available Daily in Uganda?

Uganda offers 144 gorilla permits daily for trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi alone has 18 habituated gorilla groups, with trekking organized across four sectors:

• Buhoma: 4 gorilla families.
• Ruhija: 4 gorilla families.
• Rushaga: 8 gorilla families (the highest number).
• Nkuringo: 3 gorilla families.

Each family is visited by a maximum of 8 people per day.
