Why Chimpanzee Trekking in Kalinzu Forest Is Worth It

With around 200 chimpanzees calling Kalinzu Forest home, including over 70 habituated individuals, your trekking adventure will bring you face-to-face with these incredible creatures. Managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the National Forestry Authority, the trek typically lasts 2–3 hours (or longer, depending on the chimps’ movement). Once you locate them, you’ll spend an unforgettable hour watching them eat, play and rest in their natural habitat.

The trek itself is an adventure, offering the chance to spot other wildlife like monkeys butterflies, reptiles and even some mammals, depending on your luck and keen observation skills.

How Much Does Chimpanzee Trekking in Kalinzu Forest Cost?

• Chimpanzee Trekking Permit: $130 per person (for both foreign residents and non-residents). This permit grants you one hour with the habituated chimpanzees.
• Additional Costs: Transport, accommodation and guiding fees, depending on your itinerary.

Why Your Trekking Fee Supports Conservation

For just $130 per person, the experience is not only affordable but also deeply rewarding. Your contribution helps fund the conservation of chimpanzees and their natural habitat while supporting the local community and Uganda’s conservation efforts.

Without activities like chimpanzee trekking, Kalinzu Forest might face destruction due to encroachment. The revenue generated promotes environmental conservation and ensures that the forest remains a safe haven for wildlife. By participating, you’re not just enjoying an incredible experience—you’re also playing a vital role in protecting Uganda’s natural treasures.

Best Time to Visit Kalinzu Forest for Chimpanzee Trekking

The best time to enjoy exclusive chimpanzee trekking in Kalinzu Forest is during Uganda’s dry seasons, which run from June to October and December to March. These months experience minimal rainfall, making trekking trails easier to navigate. Additionally, the vegetation is less dense, offering clearer views of the chimpanzees and better opportunities for stunning photographs.

During the wet seasons (April, May and November), trekking can be a bit more challenging due to muddy trails and taller vegetation. However, these months have their own advantages: food is plentiful in the forest, meaning the chimpanzees tend to stay closer, resulting in shorter trekking distances.
