Is Gorilla Trekking in DR Congo Safe?

While DR Congo has faced challenges in the past, including civil wars and disease outbreaks, the situation has improved significantly. These issues have historically affected the tourism industry, with concerns about safety in certain areas. However, with ongoing efforts from the government, local authorities and international organizations, DR Congo is gradually returning to stability. Many national parks, including Virunga and Kahuzi Beiga, are now open for tourism.

Today, gorilla trekking in DR Congo is safe and many tourists are opting to visit Congo instead of Uganda or Rwanda, as gorilla trekking permits in DR Congo are more affordable. The country’s national parks have implemented effective security and health measures, allowing for a secure and enriching experience for trekkers.

Where to Experience Exclusive Gorilla Trekking in DR Congo

In DR Congo, you can enjoy exclusive gorilla trekking in two iconic national parks:

• Virunga National Park for Mountain Gorilla Trekking
• Kahuzi Beiga National Park for Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking

Virunga National Park: Home to Mountain Gorillas

Virunga National Park is one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse parks. It’s famous worldwide for being one of the few places on Earth where you can trek the Mountain Gorillas. The park also offers other exciting activities like the Nyiragongo volcano hike, chimpanzee tracking, bird watching and nature walks.

Mountain Gorillas in Virunga are part of the Virunga Massif, a region shared by Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo. The park is one of the best places to see these incredible animals in the wild.

Kahuzi Beiga National Park: Home to Eastern Lowland Gorillas

Kahuzi Beiga National Park, established in 1970, is known for being the only place where you can trek the Eastern Lowland Gorillas, also known as Grauer’s Gorillas. These gorillas are the largest of all gorilla species. Trekking in this park is unique, as it offers a chance to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

Located just 30 km from Bukavu, the park is easily accessible by both road and air. Kahuzi Beiga is home to 12 gorilla families, with 2 habituated families available for trekking. The Chimanuka family is especially popular, as it contains over 36 individuals—one of the largest gorilla families in the world.

Best Time to Visit DR Congo for Gorilla Trekking

When planning your gorilla trekking adventure in DR Congo, it’s important to consider the climate. As Congo lies in the tropics, it experiences a tropical climate year-round, with both Virunga National Park and Kahuzi Beiga National Park sharing similar weather patterns. Both parks can experience unpredictable rains, so it’s essential to choose your trekking dates carefully.

The best months for gorilla trekking in DR Congo are during the dry season, which typically spans:

• December, January, February
• June, July, August, September

During these months, the trails are drier, making the treks easier and more enjoyable. The vegetation is also less dense, giving you better visibility when spotting the gorillas.

The wet season (March, April, May, October, November) sees fuller vegetation, which can make trekking more challenging. The trails become slippery and the dense plant life can make it harder to spot the gorillas. As a result, many travelers tend to avoid the wet months.

However, if you’re flexible with your timing, there’s an off-peak offer for gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park during the low season. From mid-March to mid-May and mid-October to mid-December, the gorilla permits are available at a reduced rate of USD 200 per person per trek, which offers excellent value for your adventure.
