Nestled in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Nkuringo offers a unique opportunity to trek the mountain gorillas in a region that’s not only rich in wildlife but also boasts stunning landscapes. This area is home to the famous Nkuringo and Christmas gorilla families, with occasional visits from the Bushaho gorilla family, who move between Rushaga and Nkuringo. While Nkuringo is known for its beautiful scenery, it also presents more challenging terrain, making it a perfect destination for energetic trekkers seeking more than just a gorilla sighting but an adventurous hike. From Nkuringo, you’ll also enjoy breathtaking views of the Virunga Volcanoes in both Uganda and Rwanda, adding a captivating element to your safari.
Meet the Nkuringo Mountain Gorilla Families
Nkuringo Gorilla Family
The Nkuringo family is one of the oldest habituated groups in Bwindi, first trekked in 2004 after being habituated in 1997. Named after the local area “Nkuringo,” meaning “Hills,” this family initially had 19 members but currently has 12. The group is remembered for the beloved silverback Rafiki, who passed away in 2008 and for being the first to give birth to twins in 2004 (one of whom sadly passed away). This family exemplifies the strength and resilience of mountain gorillas in Bwindi.
Bushaho Gorilla Family
Habituated in 2016, the Bushaho gorilla family currently consists of 9 members. Like other groups, the family can grow as new members are born or when the dominant silverback attracts females from unhabituated groups. The introduction of the Bushaho family increased Bwindi’s habituated gorilla families to 17, cementing Uganda’s reputation as one of the best places to see endangered mountain gorillas in the wild.
Christmas Gorilla Family
Located in southern Bwindi, the Christmas gorilla family is the third habituated group in Nkuringo. This family has 9 members, with usually 6 visible during trekking. Led by the dominant silverback Christmas, along with a blackback, three females and a baby, this group is known for its playful behavior. The Christmas family occasionally visits nearby communities in search of food, making their treks especially engaging.
Essential Gear and What to Bring for Nkuringo Gorilla Trekking
Trekking the gorillas in Nkuringo requires navigating steep and often muddy trails, frequently accompanied by rain. To ensure comfort and safety, wear sturdy hiking shoes and dress in thick trousers and long-sleeve shirts to protect against stinging nettles. Morning temperatures can be chilly, so layering with a sweatshirt or jersey is advisable.
Your clothes will likely get muddy during the trek, so wear items you don’t mind getting dirty—it’s all part of the adventure! Bring old gardening gloves to help grip thorny vegetation safely.
Pack light in a waterproof daypack, carrying essentials such as sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and at least 2 liters of water. During the rainy season, a poncho or raincoat is recommended. Protect camera gear from moisture and consider bringing binoculars, although the trek’s focus is usually on the gorillas themselves.
Best Time to Trek Nkuringo Mountain Gorillas
Nkuringo is open year-round, situated in a tropical rainforest where rain can fall at any time. However, the ideal trekking months are June to August and December to February, when rainfall is minimal, trails are less slippery and access is easier. If trekking during the wetter seasons (March to May or November), you might find discounted accommodations but be prepared for wet conditions.
