Meet the Rushaga Gorilla Families

Nshongi Gorilla Group

Once the largest gorilla family in Bwindi, the Nshongi group initially had 36 members. Over time, it split to form the Bweza and Mishaya families. The current Nshongi group now includes 25 members, led by dominant silverback Nshongi. The group features 3 sub-silverbacks, 4 blackbacks, 7 adult females, 6 juveniles and 4 infants. It’s a lively and engaging group to observe, with playful interactions among the younger members.

Mishaya Gorilla Group

The Mishaya group split from Nshongi in 2010 when silverback Mishaya took 7 individuals to form a new family. Known for its aggressive nature, Mishaya’s group has since grown to 12 members, including 3 infants. The group’s dynamics make for an intriguing tracking experience.

Bweza Gorilla Group

Bweza separated from the Nshongi family in 2013 with only 8 members. Attempts to reunite with Nshongi were unsuccessful and Bweza remained independent. Today, it features a silverback, several females and juveniles, offering an exciting opportunity to observe family interactions in the wild.

Kahungye Gorilla Family

The Kahungye group was habituated in 2011 with 27 individuals but internal disputes caused a split, giving rise to the Busingye group. Kahungye is now composed of 13 members, including silverback Rumansi and two blackbacks—Rwigi and Ruhamuka. This group continues to offer an enriching trekking experience.

Busingye Gorilla Family

The Busingye group was formed in 2012 after splitting from Kahungye. Despite the name “Busingye,” meaning “peace,” its silverback is quite assertive, often seen engaging with other groups. It began with 7 individuals and now consists of 8 members. The group’s history of gaining females from rival families makes it fascinating to follow.

What to Wear and Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga

Gorilla trekking in Rushaga can involve steep and muddy trails, so preparation is key. Here’s what to bring:

• Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots with excellent grip are essential for slippery conditions.
