Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Nestled in southwestern Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest shares a border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. As one of the oldest rainforests in Africa, it is a vital sanctuary for the endangered mountain gorillas, with more than half of the world’s remaining population living here. The park was declared a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, offering visitors a unique opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Gorilla Families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is split into four sectors, each home to unique gorilla families:

• Buhoma Sector: Mubare Gorilla Family, Habinyanja Gorilla Family, Rushegura Gorilla Family, Katwe Gorilla Group.
• Ruhija Sector: Bitukura Gorilla Family, Oruzogo Gorilla Family, Mukiza Gorilla Family, Kyaruguriro Gorilla Family.
• Rushaga Sector: Nshongi Gorilla Family, Mishaya Gorilla Family, Bweza Gorilla Family, Bikyingi Gorilla Family, Kahungye Gorilla Family, Busingye Gorilla Family, Mucunguzi Gorilla Family.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi: What to Expect

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi begins early in the morning, with a briefing at each sector’s park headquarters. You’ll be guided through the forest by expert rangers and trackers, who help locate the gorillas. Once found, you’ll have one hour to observe these incredible creatures in their natural environment.

Trekking in Bwindi is an exciting yet challenging adventure. The trails are often steep and muddy and while you may encounter rain at any time, the experience of seeing gorillas up close is well worth the effort. The gorillas share 95% of human DNA, making them fascinating to watch as they interact with each other in their group.

Gorilla Trekking Permits

Uganda Wildlife Authority issues 144 gorilla trekking permits per day for Bwindi, with each family group allowing a maximum of 8 visitors per day. The cost of a gorilla trekking permit is as follows:

• USD 800 for Non-Foreign Residents
• USD 700 for Foreign Residents
• UGX 300,000 for East African Citizens

Due to the high demand for permits, especially during peak seasons (January, February, July, August, September and December), they often sell out quickly. We recommend booking in advance to secure your spot.

Best Time to Trek Uganda’s Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a tropical forest with year-round rainfall, offers incredible gorilla trekking opportunities. However, the best time to visit is during the drier months: January, February, June, July, August and early September. During these months, rainfall is relatively lower, making the trekking experience more comfortable. Despite this, Bwindi’s weather can change unpredictably, so it’s important to be prepared for rain at any time.

Interestingly, some travelers prefer the rainy season, as the forest thrives with abundant plant life, making it easier to spot gorillas. Gorilla permits can sell out quickly, especially during peak months, so it’s advisable to book your permit in advance to ensure you don’t miss out.

What to Wear and Bring for Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding, so proper attire is essential:

• Sturdy shoes: Ideal for steep, slippery terrain.
• Long sleeves and pants: To protect against stinging nettles and thorns.
• Rain gear: A poncho or raincoat is a good idea, as rain is common.
• Daypack: Carry a lightweight waterproof bag for your essentials.
• Water: Stay hydrated with at least two liters of water.

Binoculars aren’t necessary for seeing the gorillas but birdwatchers might find them useful.
