Fly-in Gorilla Habituation Safari

Fly-in Gorilla Habituation Safari

Are you ready for an unforgettable adventure? A Fly-in Gorilla Habituation Safari offers an exclusive opportunity to spend extended time with the endangered mountain gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Unlike standard gorilla trekking, this unique safari allows you to interact with these incredible creatures for four hours, providing a deeper connection and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

What is the Gorilla Habituation Experience?

The Gorilla Habituation Experience involves trekking through the forest to find semi-habituated mountain gorillas. These gorillas live in a family group but are not yet fully accustomed to human presence. Once located, you’ll participate in activities that help the gorillas become familiar with human observers. The experience offers an incredible four-hour encounter, providing you with much more time than the standard one-hour trekking experience.

This activity is limited to small groups of just four people per gorilla family, making it an intimate and unique wildlife adventure.

Why Choose a Gorilla Habituation Safari Over Regular Trekking?

A Gorilla Habituation Experience is perfect for those who want more than just a brief encounter with the gorillas. Unlike regular trekking, where you’ll spend only one hour with the gorillas, this experience allows you to join researchers and trackers in a small group to observe and interact with semi-habituated gorilla families.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is the only place in the world where this immersive experience is available, making it a must-do for any wildlife lover visiting Africa.

Gorilla Habituation vs. Gorilla Trekking

While both activities take place in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the key difference is the amount of time spent with the gorillas. During a standard gorilla trekking tour, you spend just one hour with the gorillas, whereas in the Gorilla Habituation Experience, you’ll be with them for four hours. Additionally, Gorilla Habituation is done in groups of four, while regular trekking is conducted with groups of up to eight people.

The cost of a Gorilla Habituation permit is $1500 for foreign non-residents, $1000 for residents and 750,000 UGX for East African citizens. In comparison, a regular Gorilla Trekking permit costs $700 for foreign non-residents, $600 for residents and 250,000 UGX for East African citizens.

Where Does the Gorilla Habituation Experience Take Place?

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is exclusively available in the southern sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, specifically Rushaga and Nkuringo. Bwindi has four sectors (Ruhija, Buhoma, Rushaga and Nkuringo) but only two sectors—Rushaga and Nkuringo—offer this extraordinary experience.

How to Get There – Fly-In Access to Bwindi

You can easily access the southern sectors of Bwindi (Rushaga and Nkuringo) by flying from Entebbe International Airport or Kampala’s Kajjansi airfield to Kisoro Airstrip. There are scheduled and chartered flights operated by domestic airlines like Aero Link and Fly Uganda. From the airstrip, we will arrange a transfer to the park to ensure a seamless journey.

Cost of the Gorilla Habituation Experience

The cost of a Gorilla Habituation permit is a significant part of your overall safari cost but it’s well worth the investment. The permits are priced as follows:

• $1500 for foreign non-residents
• $1000 for foreign residents
• 750,000 UGX for East African citizens

In addition to the permit, you’ll also need to budget for transport, accommodation and guiding services.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Habituation in Uganda

The best time to do the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi is during Uganda’s dry season, from June to October and December to March. These months offer milder weather conditions and easier trekking conditions in the forest. The drier months also ensure better visibility, making for optimal photography and gorilla sightings.

During Uganda’s rainy months (April, May and November), the forest vegetation can become denser but the treks tend to be shorter, as the gorillas do not travel as far for food.

Accommodation Options Near Bwindi

Since the Gorilla Habituation Experience takes place in the southern part of Bwindi, we recommend staying close to the park for convenience. Accommodation options range from budget to luxury, including:
