Fly to Kisoro and Trek Gorillas in Nkuringo Region of Bwindi

Dreaming of trekking mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park? Consider flying directly to Kisoro Airstrip and trekking the gorillas in the Nkuringo region. Located in the southern part of Bwindi, Nkuringo is home to three incredible gorilla families: the Nkuringo family, the Bushaho family and the Christmas family. Sometimes, the Bushaho family moves from the Rushaga sector to Nkuringo, so there’s a chance you could encounter them in either area.

Planning Your Gorilla Trekking Adventure in Nkuringo

1. Secure Your Gorilla Permit in Advance

Nkuringo sector offers 24 gorilla permits per day, so it’s important to book your permit well in advance. We recommend securing your permit at least 3 to 4 months prior to your desired trekking date, especially during the high season when permits can sell out quickly. You can pay a deposit (100%, 70% or 30%) to block your spot.

2. Book Your Accommodation in Nkuringo

Nkuringo offers a range of luxury and budget accommodations for trekkers. For a more comfortable and upscale experience, consider staying at:

• Gorilla Heights Lodge
• Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge
• Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge

If you’re on a budget, there are also options in Rushaga or camping near Nkuringo.

3. Comfortable Travel to Nkuringo

To make your journey more comfortable, consider traveling in a 4×4 Land Cruiser, ideal for the rugged roads leading to Nkuringo. Alternatively, you can fly to Kisoro Airstrip, which is just 2 hours away from Nkuringo by car. This is a great option for those who want to skip the long drive from Entebbe or Kampala (which takes about 8-9 hours). If you fly into Kisoro, you’ll be picked up by a professional guide and taken directly to your lodge.

What to Wear for Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo

It’s essential to dress appropriately for your gorilla trek to ensure both comfort and safety. Here’s a list of recommended items to bring:

• Long-sleeved sweater: The weather can get chilly, so a sweater is a good idea.
• Two pairs of long trousers: For protection against branches and rough terrain.
• Waterproof hiking boots: Essential for the muddy, slippery conditions.
• Hat and sunglasses: Optional but useful if it’s sunny.
• Camera and extra batteries: Capture the magic of the moment (don’t forget to turn off the flash!).
• Binoculars: To spot birds and other wildlife in the forest.
• Gardening gloves: These will help you hold onto branches during the trek.
• Raincoat: Bwindi is a rainforest, so sudden showers are common.
• Mosquito repellent: Essential for protecting yourself from insects.
• Sunscreen: Helpful if it gets hot, as sunburns can happen even in the rainforest.
• Neutral colors: Avoid bright colors, black and blue, as these can disturb the gorillas or attract insects.
