Gombe National Park

Gombe National Park: A Top Destination for Chimpanzee and Primate Viewing

Located in western Tanzania, Gombe National Park is one of the best places to experience primates in East Africa. Situated north of Kigoma town, along the shores of the world’s second-deepest lake, Lake Tanganyika, the park offers a pristine environment for wildlife. It gained international fame through Dr. Jane Goodall’s pioneering research on chimpanzees, which began in 1960 and is considered the longest-running study of primates in the world. Gombe is home to several habituated groups of chimpanzees, making it a top spot for chimpanzee trekking and primate sightings in Tanzania.

Chimpanzee Trekking and Primate Viewing in Gombe

Gombe National Park is famous for its habituated chimpanzee groups. Visitors can track and film these remarkable primates with the help of experienced ranger guides along the main tracking trail. Besides chimpanzees, Gombe is also home to a wide variety of other primates and wildlife, including olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, red colobus monkeys and diademed monkeys. Other wildlife species include leopards, bushbucks, buffaloes, waterbucks and various bird species such as the African fish eagle and palm-nut vulture.

Best Time to Visit Gombe for Chimpanzee Trekking

The ideal time for chimpanzee trekking in Gombe is during the rainy season (from November to mid-May), when the lush green vegetation provides stunning scenic views and the chimps are more active. The dry season (from May to October) is also a great time for shorter hikes and photography, as the dry conditions make it easier to track the chimpanzees.
