Gorilla Families in Nkuringo Sector

Gorilla Families in Nkuringo Sector

Located in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the Nkuringo sector is home to several fascinating gorilla families, including the Nkuringo Family, Christmas Family and occasionally the Bushaho Family, which sometimes crosses over from the Rushaga sector.

Nkuringo is situated at higher altitudes, making gorilla trekking in this region physically demanding. It’s ideal for young, energetic travelers or those looking for a more adventurous experience that combines gorilla trekking with challenging hikes. On clear days, the sector offers breathtaking views of the Virunga Volcanoes in both Uganda and Rwanda, which might even inspire you to explore the surrounding region further.

Meet the Gorilla Families of Nkuringo Sector

1. Nkuringo Gorilla Family

The Nkuringo Family was the first gorilla group in this sector to undergo habituation, a process that began in 1997. It was officially opened for trekking in 2004. The family is named after the local area where it was first spotted—Nkuringo, which means “Hills” in the local language.

Initially, the group had 19 members but its size has since reduced to 12 members. The family was led by a dominant silverback named Rafiki (Swahili for “Friend”) until his passing in 2008. This group made history as the first to have twins born in 2004, though sadly, one of the twins did not survive.

2. Bushaho Gorilla Family

The Bushaho Family currently has 9 members, though this number may increase as new gorillas are born or if the dominant silverback successfully attracts members from other groups. The family was officially opened for trekking in 2016, contributing to the overall number of habituated gorilla groups in Bwindi, which now totals 17. This makes Uganda one of the top destinations for observing endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

3. Christmas Gorilla Family

The Christmas Family is the newest addition to the habituated gorilla groups in Nkuringo, bringing the total number of trekking families in this sector to three. This family gets its name from its dominant silverback, Christmas, who leads the group of 9 members. Of these, six are most commonly seen during treks, including one blackback, three adult females and one baby.

The Christmas Family is well-known for its adventurous nature, often venturing into nearby communities in search of food.

What to Pack and Wear for Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo

Gorilla trekking in Nkuringo is a physically demanding activity, often involving long walks in steep, muddy terrain. Rain can occur at any time, so it’s essential to dress and pack appropriately:

Clothing

• Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip.
• Opt for thick trousers and a long-sleeved top to protect against thorny vegetation and stinging nettles.
• Start with a sweatshirt or light jacket, as it’s often cold in the morning.

Essentials to Carry

• A waterproof daypack to protect your belongings.
• Rain gear (poncho or raincoat), especially during the rainy season.
• Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat to protect against the sun.
• At least 2 liters of drinking water and some snacks to keep you energized during the hike.
• Gardening gloves to protect your hands when grabbing onto thorny plants for support.
• A camera (sealed in a plastic bag for protection) to capture memorable moments.

Optional

• Binoculars for birdwatching, though most trekkers focus solely on the gorilla experience.

By preparing adequately, you’ll not only enjoy the incredible experience of seeing mountain gorillas but also ensure your trek is safe and comfortable.
