Meet the Gorilla Families in Ruhija Sector

Bitukura Gorilla Family

The Bitukura family was first identified near the Bitukura River and the group’s name is derived from this river. Habituation of this group began in 2007 and they were officially opened for trekking in October 2008. Thanks to their calm nature, these gorillas became accustomed to human presence quickly, making them one of the easier groups to habituate.

Originally, the family had 24 members but after some deaths and splits, the group now has 14 members, including 4 silverbacks, 4 adult females, 3 juveniles and 1 infant. The family is led by the peaceful Ndahura, who is known for his calm leadership style, making the Bitukura group a joy to observe during treks.

Oruzogo Gorilla Family

The Oruzogo family became available for tracking in 2011, after undergoing habituation. The group was originally made up of 25 members but today it consists of 17 members, led by Tibirikwata, a silverback. The family also includes 2 blackbacks, 7 females, 2 young adults and 5 infants.

The Oruzogo group is notable for its playful and energetic nature, making it a particularly entertaining group to track. In 2013, the family gained fame when one of its members gave birth to a rare set of twin gorillas, a female named Kankonda. The group’s playful behavior and their fascinating dynamics offer visitors a memorable experience.

Kyaguriro Gorilla Family (Research Group)

The Kyaguriro family was established in 1999 and has been reserved for research purposes. Initially, the group consisted of 20 members, led by Rukina, the dominant silverback. After Rukina tragically died from a lightning strike, the group faced leadership struggles, leading to fights between Mukiza and Rukara, which eventually split the family into two: Kyaguriro A and Kyaguriro B.

Although not open to tourists for trekking, Kyaguriro remains a crucial part of ongoing research and habituation efforts.

What to Expect During Your Gorilla Trekking Adventure

While tracking the gorillas, you’ll likely encounter steep slopes and thick vegetation, so be prepared for an exciting and strenuous journey. Once you reach the gorillas, you’ll have an unforgettable experience observing them up close, in their natural habitat. The gorillas are used to human presence, so you’ll be able to enjoy these moments without disturbing their daily activities.

For those interested in birdwatching, binoculars can be useful, though the trek tends to focus on reaching the gorillas. The surrounding forests are also home to many bird species, offering an extra layer of excitement for nature lovers.

In the end, a gorilla trek in Ruhija sector will be a challenging yet deeply rewarding experience, providing the chance to see some of the world’s most magnificent animals in one of the most beautiful and remote parts of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Best Time to Trek Gorillas in Ruhija Sector

The Ruhija region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is open for gorilla trekking throughout the year. However, it’s worth noting that Bwindi is a tropical rainforest, meaning it can rain at any time. For the best experience, consider trekking during the dry seasons, which are from June to August and December to February. During these months, the rainfall is minimal, making the forest trails less slippery and easier to navigate.

If you’re traveling during the wet seasons—from March to May and November—you may encounter more rain, which can make trekking more challenging. That said, these months often come with perks, such as discounted accommodation rates at some lodges and the forest’s lush greenery adds to the charm of the adventure.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija

The terrain in Ruhija sector can be challenging, with steep slopes and muddy conditions. To ensure a comfortable and safe trek, it’s essential to wear appropriate clothing and gear:

• Footwear: Sturdy shoes are a must, as the muddy and slippery conditions can be tough on your feet.
• Clothing: Wear thick trousers and a long-sleeved top to protect against stinging nettles and other vegetation. A sweatshirt or jersey is recommended as it can be cold in the mornings and it provides added protection.
• Gloves: Gardening gloves are helpful for gripping thorny plants along the trail.
• Rain Gear: The weather can be unpredictable, so pack a poncho or raincoat in your daypack during the rainy season. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are also advisable throughout the year.
• Water and Snacks: Carry at least 2 liters of water, especially on longer treks. You might also want to bring snacks for energy during your hike. Bottled water can be purchased at local accommodations.
• Camera Gear: Protect your camera gear with a waterproof bag or plastic bag during the rainy season.
