Gorilla Habituation Tour from Entebbe: A Unique Safari Experience

Are you looking to spend more time with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat? Our Gorilla Habituation Tour, starting from Entebbe, offers a rare opportunity to trek and observe these magnificent creatures for up to 4 hours. If you’re curious about how far Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is from Entebbe, it’s approximately 540 km away, with a drive time of around 8 to 9 hours. Alternatively, you can take a 1-2 hour flight from Entebbe Airport to Kisoro or Kihihi airstrip, followed by a short transfer to Bwindi.

What is the Gorilla Habituation Experience?

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is a unique adventure where you spend up to 4 hours with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Unlike traditional gorilla trekking, where you only spend an hour with the gorillas, the habituation experience allows you to actively participate in the process of getting these gorillas accustomed to human presence.

You’ll trek through the forest in small groups of just 4 people to locate a semi-habituated gorilla family. This intimate experience provides more time to observe their behavior, ask questions and learn from the expert guides. It’s an unforgettable way to gain deeper insight into the lives of these amazing creatures.

Where Does the Gorilla Habituation Experience Take Place?

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is only available in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, specifically in the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors. These areas are home to two gorilla families that are still in the habituation process. While Bwindi is divided into 4 sectors for normal gorilla trekking (Ruhija, Buhoma, Rushaga and Nkuringo), only the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors are open for the habituation experience.

Gorilla Habituation vs. Gorilla Tracking: What’s the Difference?

While both activities take place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the key difference lies in the time spent with the gorillas and the group size:

• Gorilla Habituation Experience:
  • 4-hour encounter with the gorillas
  • Limited to 4 people per group
  • Price: USD 1500 for foreign non-residents, USD 1000 for foreign residents, UGX 750,000 for East African citizens
• Gorilla Tracking:
  • 1-hour encounter with the gorillas
  • Limited to 8 people per group
  • Price: USD 800 for foreign non-residents, USD 700 for foreign residents, UGX 300,000 for East African citizens

The Gorilla Habituation Experience offers a more immersive and longer opportunity to interact with the gorillas compared to traditional Gorilla Tracking, making it a truly unique safari experience.

Best Time for the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda

The Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda is best enjoyed between June and October and from December to March. During these months, Uganda experiences its dry season, which means less rainfall and easier trekking conditions in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The vegetation is also less dense, giving you better views of the mountain gorillas, making it perfect for photography.

From April to May and November, the rainy season brings lush vegetation, which can make gorilla sightings a bit more challenging. However, the benefit during these months is that treks are usually shorter, as the gorillas don’t need to travel far for food. Regardless of the season, the Gorilla Habituation Experience is available year-round and your chances of spotting the gorillas are 99%.
