Gorilla trekking is one of the most iconic wildlife experiences in Africa. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that attracts travelers from all over the world. Despite the challenges, such as the high costs and the physically demanding trek, watching these majestic creatures in their natural habitat is a reward like no other. Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo are the only places where you can encounter mountain gorillas and Trek Africa Gorillas will ensure your trip is seamless and memorable.

What to Expect on Your Gorilla Trekking Adventure

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense forests, often with difficult terrain, thick vegetation and river crossings, to find mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. This activity is physically demanding, so it’s important to be in good shape. The trek itself can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location that day.

During your trek, you’ll spend one hour observing the gorillas. However, if you’d like to spend more time with these incredible animals, you can opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This option allows you to spend up to 4 hours with the gorillas, providing a deeper, more immersive experience.

Top Gorilla Trekking Destinations from Mutukula Border, Masaka

From Mutukula border Masaka, your gorilla trekking adventure can take you to several iconic national parks across Africa. The main destinations are:

• Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda
• Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda
• Virunga National Park in DR Congo, where you can also see lowland gorillas in Kahuzi Beiga National Park.

In all of these parks, a gorilla permit is required to trek. It’s essential to secure your permit early as they sell out quickly, especially during peak season (June to September). We recommend booking your trek at least 5 months in advance to ensure availability. Gorilla permits can be obtained directly from the respective wildlife authorities or through a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas.

Gorilla Permit Costs and Options in Uganda

• For foreign non-residents, the permit costs $800 per person per trek.
• For residents, the permit costs $700 per person.
• East African citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi and South Sudan) pay $80 per person.

These permits allow you to spend one hour with the mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Uganda has 17 habituated gorilla families, with 136 permits available daily.

For a more extended experience, the Gorilla Habituation Experience costs $1500 per person, offering 4 hours with semi-habituated gorillas under the supervision of trackers and researchers.

Age Limits and Accessibility for Gorilla Trekking

The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Uganda is 15 years and the maximum age is 85 years, depending on your fitness level. For older travelers or those with limited mobility, sedan chairs are available in Bwindi Forest to carry trekkers who find it difficult to walk. These chairs are provided by local porters and you can hire one for $400-$500. This makes gorilla trekking accessible to everyone, including elderly travelers and those with physical limitations.

Important Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy

Booking a gorilla permit is a significant commitment and cancellations are not refunded. The cancellation policy for gorilla permits in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo is the same: if you cancel within 0-8 days of the trek, you’ll lose the permit fee.

Best Months for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking from the Mutukula border Masaka can be done year-round but the best time to embark on your adventure is during the drier months, which typically occur from January to February and June to early September. These months offer the most favorable conditions for trekking, as the weather is easier to navigate and the vegetation is less dense, providing clearer views of the gorillas. The drier season also makes traveling to the park more comfortable and enjoyable.
