Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, located in southern Uganda near the Congo border, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The park is divided into four sectors for gorilla trekking:
- Buhoma (North)
- Ruhija (Northeast)
- Rushaga (South)
- Nkuringo (Southwest)
Each sector offers unique trekking experiences, with a limited number of permits issued daily to ensure sustainable tourism. Gorilla trekking permits in Bwindi cost:
- $800 for foreign non-residents
- $700 for East African residents
- $80 for East African citizens
The trek allows you to spend one magical hour observing a habituated gorilla family, led by a dominant silverback.
Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga National Park, located in Kisoro District, is Uganda’s smallest national park and part of the Virunga Mountains. It shares borders with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Congo’s Virunga National Park. Mgahinga offers:
- Gorilla trekking experiences.
- Encounters with the endangered golden monkeys.
- A backdrop of three stunning volcanoes: Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabyinyo and Mount Muhabura.
The park’s rich biodiversity includes montane rainforests, bamboo forests and unique volcanic landscapes.
When Is the Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?
The best time to go gorilla trekking is during Uganda’s dry seasons:
- January to February
- June to September
During these months, the trails are less muddy and the vegetation is less dense, making it easier to spot gorillas and enjoy clear views of the forest.
Essential Packing List for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
To ensure a comfortable trek, here’s what you should bring:
- Long-sleeved shirts and trousers for protection.
- Waterproof hiking boots and a rain jacket (it’s a rainforest, after all!).

- Insect repellent and gardening gloves for navigating thick vegetation.
