Gorilla Trekking and Hiking in Bwindi

Gorilla Trekking and Hiking in Bwindi

Are you planning an African adventure and unsure which country offers the best gorilla trekking experience? Look no further! Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda is one of the top destinations for gorilla trekking and hiking. While gorilla trekking is also available in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda), Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) and Virunga National Park (DR Congo), Uganda stands out as a safer and more affordable option.

Here’s why:

• In Uganda, a gorilla permit costs $800 per person per trek compared to $1,500 in Rwanda and $400 in DR Congo (though DR Congo is less stable).
• This experience offers you a rare chance to spend one magical hour with the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

The trek involves hiking through the lush forests of Bwindi or Mgahinga, guided by experienced rangers who help you track a habituated gorilla family. Once you locate them, you’ll learn about their behaviors and enjoy an unforgettable close encounter with these majestic primates.

How to Book Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

To secure your gorilla trekking experience, the first step is purchasing a gorilla permit, which you can get through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Here are the current prices:

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi can be done year-round but the dry seasons are generally considered the best times to visit:

• January to February
• June to early September

During these months, the trails are easier to navigate and the vegetation is less dense, providing clearer views for photography.

However, the wet season (March to May and October to November) also has its perks. The abundance of food during these months means gorillas don’t travel far, often making the treks shorter. Plus, the forests are lush and beautiful, enhancing the overall experience.
