In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about planning this incredible safari experience with Trek Africa Gorillas.

Why Combine Gorilla Trekking in Uganda with a Zanzibar Beach Escape?

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is one of the most sought-after wildlife experiences in the world. It offers the rare opportunity to come face-to-face with endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. After an exhilarating trek in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, what better way to unwind than on the pristine beaches of Zanzibar? Known as the ‘Spice Island,’ Zanzibar boasts crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches and rich cultural heritage, making it the perfect post-safari retreat.

How to Plan Your Gorilla Trekking and Zanzibar Beach Holiday

There are several ways to structure your itinerary, depending on your travel preferences:

1. Start with Gorilla Trekking in Uganda – Arrive in Uganda, embark on a gorilla trekking adventure and then fly to Zanzibar for a relaxing beach holiday.
2. Begin in Zanzibar – Relax on the island’s stunning beaches before heading to Uganda for a thrilling gorilla trekking experience.
3. Multi-Destination Safari – Combine gorilla trekking with other wildlife safaris in Uganda or Tanzania before heading to Zanzibar.

Flight connections between Uganda and Zanzibar are available through airlines such as Kenya Airways, RwandAir and Airlink.

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda: What to Expect

Gorilla trekking in Uganda takes place in two national parks:

• Bwindi Impenetrable National Park – Home to over half of the world’s mountain gorillas, divided into four trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.
• Mgahinga Gorilla National Park – A smaller but equally rewarding gorilla trekking destination, also offering golden monkey tracking.

How Much Does Gorilla Trekking in Uganda Cost?

The cost of a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda is:

• $800 per person for foreign non-residents
• $700 per person for foreign residents
• $80 per person for East African citizens

This permit allows you to spend one hour observing the gorillas once you locate them during your trek.

Best Time to Go: When to Plan Your Gorilla Trekking Safari

The best time to visit for gorilla trekking is during Uganda’s dry seasons:

• January to February
• June to September

During these months, trails are less muddy, making the trek easier and improving visibility for wildlife photography.

What to Wear for Gorilla Trekking

Packing the right gear is essential for a comfortable and safe trek. Here’s what you should bring:

• Long-sleeved shirts and long pants
• Waterproof hiking boots
• A rain jacket (as rain is unpredictable in the forest)
• Gardening gloves for gripping branches
• A hat and sunglasses (optional but useful)
• Insect repellent and sunscreen
• A good camera with extra batteries (flash photography is not allowed)
• Neutral-colored clothing (avoid bright colors and black/blue, which attract insects)
