Gorilla Trekking for Seniors and Older Travelers
Planning a memorable gorilla trekking adventure with your elderly family members? Whether it’s your parents, grandparents or loved ones, Trek Africa Gorillas ensures that even seniors and those with limited mobility can enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience. There’s no maximum age for gorilla trekking and with the right support, older travelers can easily trek to see the majestic mountain gorillas.
Support Options to Make Gorilla Trekking Easier for Seniors
If you’re concerned about the physical demands of trekking, don’t worry! We offer several options to assist elderly travelers. You can hire a porter to carry your backpack and provide extra support during the hike. Additionally, a sedan chair is available for those who need a bit more help getting through the forest. For a fee of around $300+, this chair will transport you to and from the gorillas, ensuring a comfortable trek. We’ve had visitors in their 70s and 80s successfully trek and see the gorillas, proving that age is not a barrier.
Essential Tips and Considerations for Older Travelers
When planning a gorilla trek for older adults, it’s essential to think about a few key factors to ensure comfort and safety:
- Reduce Travel Time: The long drive from Entebbe to Bwindi (about 8-9 hours) can be tiring for older travelers. Consider booking a domestic flight from Entebbe to cut down travel time to just 1 hour, followed by a short drive to the park. Alternatively, starting and ending the tour in Kigali can also save time. If driving is preferred, make sure to take breaks along the way to keep everyone refreshed.
- Safety and Security: You can rest assured that security in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is excellent. Armed rangers accompany trekkers, ensuring protection from wildlife like elephants and buffaloes. In Uganda and Rwanda, there have been no security issues in recent years. However, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, security can be more unpredictable, so we recommend trekking in Uganda or Rwanda for peace of mind.
- Accommodation Options: Bwindi offers a variety of accommodations to suit elderly travelers, from luxury lodges to more budget-friendly options. Many of these are built to accommodate those with mobility challenges. Depending on your preference, we can recommend the best lodging options within the park’s different sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo).
- Preparing for the Trek: To make the experience as enjoyable as possible, we recommend that older travelers prepare in advance by engaging in light physical activities such as walking, climbing stairs or hiking in a local area. This will help build stamina and ease the trek.
What to Pack for a Comfortable Gorilla Trek
For a successful trek, especially for seniors, packing the right gear is essential. Here’s a recommended packing list:
- Hiking boots (comfortable, waterproof)
- Gardening gloves (for holding onto branches and trees)
- Rain jacket (weather can be unpredictable)
- Warm sweater or jacket (it gets cold in the forest)
- Long-sleeved shirt and long pants (to protect against nettles and insects)
- Insect repellent (to ward off mosquitoes and other bugs)
- Walking stick (for stability)
- Sunscreen and sunglasses (for sun protection, depending on the season)
- Binoculars (to enjoy the other wildlife, including birds and primates)
- Camera with extra batteries (no flash allowed)
Best Time of Year for Seniors to Go Gorilla Trekking
The best time to trek for older travelers is during the drier months: January, February, June and early September. The weather is more favorable and the trekking conditions are less challenging with clearer paths and less vegetation.
Why Bwindi Is Ideal for Gorilla Trekking for Seniors
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in southwestern Uganda, is one of the best places in the world to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The park is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, offering a 98% chance of spotting them during your trek.
Bwindi is divided into several sectors for gorilla trekking: Buhoma, Nkuringo, Ruhija and Rushaga. Depending on your trekking sector, we will help you find the most suitable accommodation. Each sector offers a range of lodging options, from budget to luxury, to meet the needs of elderly travelers.
Top Lodges and Safari Camps for Older Travelers
When booking your gorilla trek, we’ll suggest accommodations based on the sector you’ll be trekking in. For example, in Buhoma, you can choose from Buhoma Community Camp (budget), Buhoma Haven Lodge (mid-range) or Bwindi Lodge and Mahogany Springs Lodge (luxury). In Rushaga, options like Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge and Four Gorillas Lodge are available. In Nkuringo, we recommend Nkuringo Bwindi Lodge or Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge for a luxurious stay.
