Gorilla Trekking for Solo Travelers in Africa

Gorilla Trekking for Solo Travelers in Africa

Are you looking to visit Africa for a gorilla trekking adventure on your own? If so, this guide will help you plan and book a successful solo gorilla trek in Uganda, Rwanda or Congo. Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that draws many travelers to Africa. Despite the costs, physical challenges and the effort required to book and complete the trek, seeing gorillas in their natural habitat is one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences you can have.

This adventure involves hiking through dense forests, navigating rough terrain, crossing rivers and battling through thick vegetation—all in search of the incredible mountain gorillas. Since the trek can be physically demanding, it’s essential to be in good physical condition before embarking on the journey. Once you find the gorillas, you’ll have the chance to spend an unforgettable hour observing them in their natural environment. For those seeking a longer experience, Gorilla Habituation in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest gives you the chance to spend up to 4 hours with the gorillas.

Where Can You Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa?

Gorilla trekking is primarily done in three countries in Africa: Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. Each country has national parks that are home to the only remaining mountain gorillas in the world:

• Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
• Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
• Congo: Virunga National Park (for mountain gorillas) and Kahuzi Biega National Park (for lowland gorillas)

In order to trek the gorillas in any of these parks, you’ll need to obtain a gorilla permit. It’s important to book your gorilla trek as early as possible—especially if you plan to travel during peak seasons (June to September)—because permits and services can sell out quickly. We recommend booking at least 5 months in advance to ensure availability.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa

The best time for gorilla trekking is during the drier months, which are typically from January, February, June, to early September. During these months, trekking conditions are more favorable, with less rain and easier access to the gorillas. You’ll also have clearer views of the gorillas, as the vegetation is not as dense.
