Gorilla Trekking from Burundi: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Adventure

Are you in Burundi or planning to start your safari journey there and are eager to experience the magic of an unforgettable gorilla trekking experience in Uganda, Rwanda or Congo? Whether you prefer to travel by road or air, Trek Africa Gorillas can help you plan your perfect gorilla trekking adventure starting right from Burundi.

Why Gorilla Trekking in Africa Is a Must-Do Experience

Gorilla trekking is one of the most unique wildlife experiences you can have. Trekking through dense forests, across challenging terrains and in search of endangered mountain gorillas, this activity is both thrilling and deeply rewarding. It’s not just about seeing these magnificent creatures; it’s about immersing yourself in their natural habitat for a truly memorable experience. Whether you’re trekking in Uganda, Rwanda or Congo, each country offers a chance to encounter these majestic animals, with the opportunity to spend time with them in their natural environment.

If you want to take your experience further, Uganda offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience, allowing you to spend up to four hours with the gorillas, observing them closely while supporting conservation efforts.

Top Gorilla Trekking Destinations Accessible from Burundi

From Burundi, you can begin your gorilla trekking journey to one of the four incredible national parks that are home to mountain gorillas:

• Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
• Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
• Congo: Virunga National Park (for Mountain Gorillas) and Kahuzi-Biega National Park (for Lowland Gorillas)

To trek in any of these parks, you’ll need to obtain a gorilla permit. Given the limited number of permits available each day, we recommend booking your gorilla trip well in advance, especially for the peak trekking seasons between June and September.

Gorilla Trekking Permit Prices by Country

The cost of a gorilla permit varies by country:

• Uganda:
  • Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person
  • East African Citizens: $80
  • Gorilla Habituation Experience: $1500 per person (4 hours with the gorillas)
• Rwanda:
  • Foreign Non-Residents: $1500 per person
  • East African Citizens: $200
• Congo:
  • Virunga National Park (Mountain Gorillas): $400 (high season), $200 (low season)
  • Kahuzi-Biega National Park (Lowland Gorillas): $400 (foreign non-residents), $200 (East African residents)

Please note that the permit price covers the trekking experience but does not include accommodation, transport, meals or other expenses. Ensure you check with your tour operator for the full package details.

What You Need to Know Before You Go

Gorilla Trekking Age Restrictions

Gorilla trekking is open to travelers aged 15 to 85, depending on fitness levels. If you’re not physically fit, some parks, like Bwindi, offer sedan chair carriers for elderly travelers who need assistance getting to the gorillas. The cost for this service ranges from $400 to $500.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

Gorilla permits are non-refundable if you cancel within 8 days of your trek date.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking from Burundi

The best time to trek gorillas from Burundi is during the dry months of January, February and from June to early September. The dry season makes travel easier and offers clearer views of the gorillas as the vegetation is less dense.
