Gorilla Trekking from Busia Border to Uganda: Your Ultimate Safari Guide

Are you dreaming of a gorilla trekking adventure starting from the Busia border post? Whether you’re based near the Busia border in Kenya or simply looking for a unique way to start your Uganda safari, Trek Africa Gorillas is here to help you plan an unforgettable trip. Gorilla trekking in Africa is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences and Uganda is one of the best destinations to witness the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

While it may seem like a challenging journey, from obtaining permits to hiking through thick forests in search of gorillas, the experience is definitely worth it. Despite the costs and physical effort involved, the thrill of encountering these incredible animals in their natural environment makes it a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that many travelers consider the highlight of their African safari.

What to Expect During Your Gorilla Trekking Adventure

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense forests, where the terrain can be challenging. You may face difficult paths, thick vegetation and even cross rivers and swamps on your way to find the gorillas. It’s an activity that requires a certain level of fitness but the rewards of encountering the gorillas in the wild are unmatched.

The trek itself lasts for several hours and once you locate a gorilla family, you’ll have the rare opportunity to spend one hour observing them in their natural environment. If you want to spend more time with the gorillas, consider opting for the Gorilla Habituation Experience, which is available in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This experience allows you to spend four hours with the gorillas under the guidance of researchers and trackers.

Where to Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa: Key Destinations

When trekking from Busia border, your journey will take you to Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. These two parks are home to Uganda’s mountain gorillas. While Uganda is the primary destination, gorilla trekking also happens in Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park) and Congo (Virunga National Park). Additionally, in Congo, you can also see Lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park.

A gorilla permit is required to trek in any of these parks. Since permits often sell out quickly, especially during peak season (June to September), it’s best to book at least 5 months in advance. Gorilla trekking can be booked directly through the national parks or with a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas.

Gorilla Permit Costs in Uganda Explained

• Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person
• Residents: $700 per person
• East African Citizens: $80 per person (Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, South Sudan)

These permits grant you access to one hour of gorilla viewing in either Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Uganda has 17 habituated gorilla families, so 136 permits are available each day for trekking.

For those who want to extend their time with the gorillas, the Gorilla Habituation Experience is an option. This experience costs $1500 per person and allows you to spend four hours with the gorillas in Bwindi Forest, guided by researchers and trackers.

Permits can be obtained through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or through Trek Africa Gorillas.

Age and Accessibility Guidelines for Gorilla Trekking

The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Uganda is 15 years and the maximum age is 85 years. If you’re an older traveler, don’t worry! Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy

Gorilla permits are non-refundable if you cancel within 0 to 8 days before your trek.

Best Seasons for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

The best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the drier months of January, February and from June to early September. During these months, the trails are more accessible and the dense vegetation is lower, making it easier to spot the gorillas.

Essential Packing List for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is an incredible experience but it does require some preparation. The terrain can be challenging, especially when it’s wet, so it’s important to pack the right gear to ensure comfort and safety.

Here’s a list of essential items you’ll need for your gorilla trekking adventure:

• Comfortable Walking Shoes or Boots: A sturdy, waterproof pair is crucial since the trails can be muddy, especially during the rainy season. You’ll encounter steep sections and uneven terrain.
• Long-Sleeve Shirt & Lightweight Long Trousers: These will protect you from undergrowth, stinging nettles and biting ants while hiking through dense forests.
• Insect Repellent: The forest can have pesky insects, so pack a good insect repellent to stay bite-free.
• Torch/Flashlight & Spare Batteries: Essential for any unexpected changes in weather or if you’re trekking early in the morning or late afternoon.
• Wet Wipes: Useful for quick clean-ups along the way.
• Water Bottle: Stay hydrated during your trek, especially in the warm, humid conditions of the forest.
• Camera & Lenses: Don’t miss the chance to capture breathtaking moments with the gorillas in their natural habitat.
• Gardening Gloves: Handy for gripping branches and clearing your path while trekking through dense forest.
• Sandals or Comfortable Walking Shoes: Perfect for relaxing around the lodge after the trek or for less challenging walks.
• Hat & Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the sun, as trekking can sometimes be under direct sunlight.
• Rain Jacket: The weather in the forest can be unpredictable, so having a lightweight, waterproof jacket is essential.
• Sweater/Fleece: Temperatures can drop, particularly in the morning, so a warm layer is a good idea.
• Swimwear: Some lodges have pools where you can relax and unwind after your trek.
• Binoculars: If you’re into wildlife or bird watching, bring binoculars to enhance your experience.
