Top Destinations for Gorilla Trekking from Kenya

You can start your gorilla trekking adventure in Kenya and head to Uganda, Rwanda or the DRC, where you can explore some of Africa’s most iconic national parks that shelter the remaining mountain gorillas. These include:

• Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda
• Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda
• Virunga National Park in the DRC

In Congo, you also have the chance to trek for Lowland gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National Park. To trek in any of these parks, you must purchase a gorilla permit, which is essential for entry. It’s best to book your gorilla trekking trip well in advance (preferably at least five months before your planned visit), as permits and services often sell out, especially during the high season (June to September).

Why Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa?

Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that draws travelers from around the world. Though it may require a bit of effort, including hiking through dense forests, crossing rivers and navigating challenging terrain, the rewards are immense. Trekking through lush forests to encounter endangered mountain gorillas is a wildlife experience like no other. You’ll have the opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures up close in their natural environment for an unforgettable hour (or even more if you opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience).

Gorilla trekking is physically demanding, so it’s important to be in good health and condition. It’s a challenging yet rewarding activity and we recommend you prepare for some steep climbs, muddy paths and occasionally rough terrain. But the effort is worth it when you come face-to-face with these gentle giants.

How Much Does a Gorilla Permit Cost?

The price of a gorilla permit varies by country:

• Uganda: A permit costs $800 per person for foreign non-residents, $700 for residents and $80 for East African citizens. This allows for a one-hour encounter with the gorillas in Bwindi or Mgahinga. If you want to spend more time with the gorillas, opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience (4 hours), which costs $1500 per person.
• Rwanda: A permit costs $1500 per person for foreign non-residents, $500 for residents and $200 for East African citizens. This gives you a one-hour gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park.
• Congo: Gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park for mountain gorillas costs $400 per person during the high season (December to mid-March and June to October) and $200 in the low season (mid-March to mid-May and mid-October to mid-December). For Lowland gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National Park, permits cost $400 for foreign non-residents, $200 for East African residents and $20 for Congolese nationals.

Please note, the cost of the gorilla permit does not cover accommodation, transportation, meals or other expenses. Be sure to check the full details of your package with your tour operator.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Africa

Gorilla trekking is possible year-round but the best time to trek is during the dry months, from January to February and June to September. These months provide the best conditions for trekking with easier access to the parks and clearer views of the gorillas.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking

When preparing for your gorilla trek, pack for comfort and practicality. Here’s a list of essential items to bring:

• Sturdy hiking boots with good grip
• Insect repellent
• Flashlight and spare batteries
• Water bottle
• Camera with extra lenses
• Long-sleeve shirt and lightweight long pants
• Gardening gloves for protection
• Rain jacket
• Hat and sunscreen
• Sweater or fleece
• Swimwear (for relaxing after the trek)
• Binoculars (for bird or game watching)

Gorilla Trekking Age Limit and Accessibility

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years, with the maximum age being 85 years, depending on your physical condition. For elderly trekkers or those with limited mobility, sedan chairs are available in Bwindi Forest to carry you through the terrain. These can be hired in advance or on the day of your trek and the cost typically ranges from $400 to $500.

Cancellation Policy for Gorilla Permits

The cancellation policy for gorilla permits is strict. If you cancel your permit less than 8 days before the trek, there is no refund. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some flexibility has been introduced, particularly in Uganda, where trekkers affected by the pandemic have been allowed to reschedule their permits up to two times.
