Gorilla Trekking from Namibia

Gorilla Trekking from Namibia: A Unique Adventure Awaits

Are you based in Namibia and dreaming of an unforgettable gorilla trekking experience? Or perhaps you’re planning a safari in Namibia and want to add gorilla trekking to your Africa adventure? No matter the reason, Gorilla Trekking in Africa is an experience of a lifetime, drawing travelers from around the globe to witness the majestic mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Though gorilla trekking requires some physical effort—hiking through thick forests, crossing rivers and navigating rugged terrain—it’s an experience unlike any other. It’s not just about the trek; it’s the chance to see these incredible creatures in the wild, an opportunity many travelers cherish for years.

What is Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense forests, often encountering difficult terrain, as you search for mountain gorillas. Once you find them, you’ll spend up to one hour observing them in their natural environment. For those who want a more immersive experience, Uganda offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience, allowing you to spend up to four hours with the gorillas.

Top Gorilla Trekking Destinations in Africa

Gorilla trekking can be done in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These countries host the only remaining mountain gorillas, located in four national parks:

• Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
• Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park.
• Congo: Virunga National Park (for mountain gorillas) and Kahuzi Biega National Park (for lowland gorillas).

Each of these parks offers a unique trekking experience but a gorilla permit is required to trek in any of them. Booking your permit well in advance (at least 5 months ahead, especially during peak seasons) is recommended as permits can sell out quickly.

Gorilla Trekking Permit Costs

• Uganda: A gorilla permit costs $800 per person for non-residents, $700 for residents and $80 for East African citizens. You can spend one hour with the gorillas. For those seeking more time, the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Forest is available for $1,500, offering four hours with the gorillas.
• Rwanda: A gorilla permit costs $1,500 for non-residents, $500 for residents and $200 for East African citizens. Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park allows for one hour of gorilla viewing.
• Congo: In Virunga National Park, permits cost $400 for high season and $200 for low season. In Kahuzi Biega National Park, permits are $400 for foreign non-residents, $200 for East African residents and $20 for Congolese citizens.

How to Get Gorilla Permits

You can book your permits either directly with the relevant national park authorities or through a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas. For travelers from Namibia, booking through a tour operator simplifies the process and ensures everything is organized for you, including accommodation, transport and meals.

Best Time of Year for Gorilla Trekking

The best time for gorilla trekking is during the dry months of January, February and June to early September. These months offer clearer views and easier trekking conditions, as the forest vegetation is less dense.

Age Limit and Accessibility for Gorilla Trekking

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years and the maximum age is 85 years, depending on your fitness level. In Bwindi Forest, seniors who may struggle with the hike can opt for a sedan chair carrier service, where porters will carry you through the forest. This service costs between $400 and $500, depending on the trek.

Understanding Gorilla Trekking Cancellation Policies

Gorilla permit cancellation policies vary by country but in general, cancellations made within 0–8 days of the trek are non-refundable.
