Gorilla Trekking from South Africa

Gorilla Trekking from South Africa

If you’re based in South Africa or planning to start your safari journey there and are eager to experience the magic of Gorilla Trekking, you’ve come to the right place! Gorilla Trekking in Africa is an unforgettable adventure that attracts travelers from all over the world. Despite its challenges—high costs, physically demanding hikes and the discomforts of forest treks—the experience of encountering endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is truly one of a kind.

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense forests, navigating difficult terrain, crossing rivers and sometimes wading through swamps, all in search of these magnificent creatures. This activity is physically demanding and it’s essential to be fit to take part. Once you reach the gorillas, you’ll have the incredible opportunity to observe them in the wild for one hour. For those who want a deeper connection with these gentle giants, you can opt for a Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Forest, where you can spend up to four hours with the gorillas.

Top Destinations for Gorilla Trekking in Africa

Gorilla trekking is available in three countries: Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). These countries are home to the last remaining mountain gorillas and offer four key national parks for trekking:

• Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
• Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
• Congo: Virunga National Park (for mountain gorillas) and Kahuzi Beiga National Park (for lowland gorillas)

In order to trek in any of these parks, you must secure a gorilla permit. Given that permits are in high demand, especially during the peak seasons (June to September), it’s important to plan ahead and book your trip at least five months in advance.

How Much Does a Gorilla Permit Cost?

• Uganda:
  • Foreign non-residents: $800 per person
  • Residents: $700 per person
  • East African citizens: $80 per person
  • Gorilla Habituation Experience: $1,500 per person (spend 4 hours with the gorillas)
• Rwanda:
  • Foreign non-residents: $1,500 per person
  • Foreign residents: $500 per person
  • East African citizens: $200 per person
• Congo:
  • Virunga National Park: $400 per person (high season), $200 (low season)
  • Kahuzi Beiga National Park: $400 (foreign non-residents), $200 (East African residents), $20 (national residents)

Please note that the permit fee covers only your trek to see the gorillas. Accommodation, meals, transportation and other expenses are not included. Be sure to check with your tour operator about the full package details.

When Is the Best Time for Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking can be done year-round but the best times are during the dry months: January, February and June to early September. These months offer better access to the parks, clearer trails and a better chance of spotting the gorillas since the vegetation is less dense.

Who Can Go Gorilla Trekking? Age and Fitness Requirements

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years and the maximum age is 85 years, depending on fitness levels. For elderly travelers, especially those trekking in Bwindi, there are sedan chair carriers available. These are used to transport trekkers who feel they cannot manage the hike. You can arrange this service in advance or on the day of your trek, with prices ranging from $400 to $500.

What Happens if You Cancel Your Gorilla Permit?

Once you’ve booked a gorilla permit, it’s essential to stick to the scheduled trekking date. Cancellation policies are strict: if you miss your trek (within 0–8 days of your booking), you will not receive a refund. However, due to COVID-19, policies have become more flexible and Uganda has allowed trekkers to change their dates up to two times for affected permits.

What to Pack for Your Gorilla Trekking Safari

When preparing for your trek, comfort and practicality are key. Here’s a list of recommended items:

• Walking/hiking boots – Essential for navigating muddy and sometimes steep terrain
• Insect repellent – To protect yourself from bugs in the forest
• Torch/flashlight – With spare batteries for visibility during early morning treks
• Water bottle – Stay hydrated during your hike
• Gardening gloves – For protection from sharp vegetation
• Rain jacket – The weather can change quickly
• Hat and sunscreen – To protect from the sun
• Camera and binoculars – Capture memories and watch wildlife
• Comfortable clothing – Long-sleeve shirts and pants to protect from nettles and insects
