South Sudan, with its remarkable game reserves and national parks, offers a perfect base for those looking to embark on a life-changing gorilla trekking experience in neighboring countries.

The Magic of Gorilla Trekking in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo

Gorilla trekking is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences you can have. Although it comes with a hefty price tag and requires some effort, the chance to witness endangered mountain gorillas up close in Uganda, Rwanda or Congo is absolutely worth it. The trek takes you through challenging, thick forest terrain, swamps and rivers but the reward of seeing these magnificent creatures in their natural environment is beyond measure.

If you’re looking to spend more time with the gorillas, you can opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where you’ll have a 4-hour encounter with these amazing primates.

Top Gorilla Trekking Destinations from South Sudan

From South Sudan, you can travel to Uganda, Rwanda or the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) for gorilla trekking. These countries are home to four national parks that host the last remaining mountain gorillas in the world:

• Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
• Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park.
• DR Congo: Virunga National Park (mountain gorillas) and Kahuzi Biega National Park (lowland gorillas).

In all these parks, you’ll need a gorilla permit to trek the gorillas. Since permits can sell out quickly, especially during peak months (June to September), we recommend booking your trek at least five months in advance.

Gorilla Permit Prices by Country

• Uganda Gorilla Permits:
  • $800 for foreign non-residents.
  • $700 for foreign residents.
  • $80 for East African citizens (including South Sudan).
  • The permit grants you a one-hour encounter with mountain gorillas. If you’d like to spend more time with them, you can opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience for $1500, which lasts 4 hours.
• Rwanda Gorilla Permits:
  • $1500 for foreign non-residents.
  • $500 for foreign residents.
  • $200 for East African citizens.
  • Rwanda offers 12 habituated gorilla families and only 96 permits are available each day.
• DR Congo Gorilla Permits:
  • $400 during the high season (Mid-December to Mid-March, June to October).
  • $200 during the low season (Mid-March to Mid-May, Mid-October to Mid-December).
  • Permits for lowland gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National Park cost $400 for foreign non-residents, $200 for East African residents and $20 for national residents.

Permits can be booked directly with the relevant park authorities or through a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas.

Important Trekking Information

Age Restrictions for Gorilla Trekking

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15, with a maximum age limit of 85, depending on fitness levels. For seniors, especially in Bwindi, you can use sedan chair carriers to help you navigate the trek. These are available at an additional cost (approximately $400–$500).

Best Months to Go Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking is available year-round but the best time is during the dry season, from June to early September and in January and February. During these months, the trails are more accessible and the vegetation is less dense, making it easier to spot the gorillas.

What to Pack for Your Gorilla Trek

• Long-sleeve cotton shirts and trousers to protect from thorns and insects.
• Insect repellent, torch and spare batteries.
