Gorilla Trekking in Africa

Gorilla Trekking in Africa: Your Ultimate Guide to Booking and Planning

If you’re dreaming of an unforgettable adventure, gorilla trekking in Africa should be at the top of your list. This once-in-a-lifetime experience allows you to observe the magnificent mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Despite the cost, effort and challenging terrain, gorilla trekking is one of the best wildlife experiences any traveler can have in Uganda, Rwanda or Congo. Here’s everything you need to know to plan and book your gorilla trekking tour.

What Is Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense forests, navigating challenging terrains like swamps, rivers and steep slopes, all in search of the elusive mountain gorillas. The experience can be physically demanding, so being in good physical condition is recommended. Trekking gives you a one-hour opportunity to interact with these incredible animals. For those who want a more immersive experience, you can opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Forest for a longer, four-hour encounter with the gorillas.

Where Can You Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa?

Gorilla trekking takes place in only a few regions of Africa, specifically in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. These countries are home to the remaining mountain gorillas and there are four national parks where you can go trekking:

• Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park & Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda
• Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda
• Virunga National Park & Kahuzi Beiga National Park in Congo

To trek in any of these parks, you must obtain a gorilla permit, which is essential for entry. Be sure to book early, especially if you’re planning your trip during peak season (June to September), as permits sell out quickly. It’s advised to book at least 5 months in advance.

How Much Does Gorilla Trekking Cost?

The cost of your gorilla trekking permit varies depending on the country and park you’re visiting.

Uganda Gorilla Permits

• Foreign non-residents: $800 per person
• Residents: $700 per person
• East African citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, South Sudan): $80 per person

Uganda offers 17 habituated gorilla families, with 136 permits available daily for trekking in Bwindi and Mgahinga. If you want to spend more time with the gorillas, you can book the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Forest for $1500, which gives you 4 hours with the gorillas.

Rwanda Gorilla Permits

• Foreign non-residents: $1500 per person
• Foreign residents: $500 per person
• East African citizens: $200 per person

Rwanda has 12 gorilla families, offering 96 permits per day for trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

Congo Gorilla Permits

• Virunga National Park (Mountain gorillas): $400 per person during peak season (mid-December to mid-March and June to October); $200 per person during the low season (mid-March to mid-May and mid-October to mid-December).
• Kahuzi Beiga National Park (Lowland gorillas): $400 for foreign non-residents, $200 for East African residents and $20 for national residents.

Please note that gorilla permits cover only the trek itself and do not include accommodation, meals, transportation or other expenses. Be sure to discuss these additional costs with your tour operator.

Age Requirements and Accessibility for Gorilla Trekking

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years, while the maximum age is 85 years, depending on your fitness level. For those who may not be able to trek due to mobility issues, sedan chair carriers are available in Bwindi Forest. These chairs are carried by porters and can be rented for $400–$500. You can arrange for a sedan chair either in advance or on the day of your trek.

Best Time of Year to Go Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking is a year-round activity but the best time to embark on this unforgettable journey is during the drier months, typically from January to February and June to early September. These months offer easier travel to the parks and provide clearer views of the gorillas, as the vegetation is not as thick. Trekking during the drier seasons makes for a more comfortable experience, as trails are less muddy and easier to navigate.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policies in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo

When planning a gorilla trekking adventure, securing a gorilla permit is essential. However, if you find that you need to cancel your trip, it’s important to understand the cancellation policy for gorilla permits in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo.

Cancellation Policy:

• The cancellation policy for gorilla permits in these countries is quite strict. If you cancel your permit 0 to 8 days before your scheduled trek, you will not receive a refund.
• It is strongly recommended that once you’ve secured a permit, you make every effort to attend the trek on your scheduled date. This policy is in place to manage the limited number of permits and ensure that these unique experiences are available to travelers.

Gorilla trekking is an adventurous activity and being prepared is key to ensuring a smooth experience. Here’s a list of recommended items to pack for your gorilla trekking trip:
