Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Starting from Ruhija Sector

Planning an unforgettable gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi starting from the Ruhija sector? With Trek Africa Gorillas, we make it easy and hassle-free to secure your permits, even during the busy high season from June to September. This is a popular time for travelers and gorilla permits and accommodations tend to sell out quickly. But don’t worry—our experienced team will ensure you don’t miss the opportunity to trek these majestic mountain gorillas in Ruhija.

About the Ruhija Sector in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Ruhija is located in the eastern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and stands at an impressive elevation of over 2,350 meters above sea level, making it the coldest region in Bwindi. This sector is home to four gorilla families: Bitukura, Mukiza, Kyaguriro and Oruzogo, all available for tracking.

Beyond gorilla trekking, Ruhija also offers incredible hiking opportunities, including trails like the Rwamunyonyi Peak, perfect for nature lovers. For travelers staying in Buhoma, Ruhija also provides a great alternative for gorilla trekking, especially during the high season when permits for other sectors may be sold out.

Essential Tips for Planning Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija

1. Book Your Gorilla Permits Early

To secure your spot for gorilla trekking in Ruhija, we recommend booking your permits at least 3 to 4 months before your planned safari date. During the low season, permits are more readily available but early booking is still advisable to avoid last-minute disappointments.

The cost of a gorilla permit is:

• $800 for foreign non-residents
• $700 for foreign residents
• UGX 300,000 for East African citizens

Each permit allows you a magical one-hour encounter with the mountain gorillas. Contact us for more details or assistance in booking your permit.

2. Choose Comfortable Accommodations

For a luxurious and memorable stay, consider the top lodges in Ruhija. While options are limited, they offer excellent service. Popular choices include:

• Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge
• Bakiga Lodge (mid-range but with luxury touches)

If you prefer high-end accommodations, you can also stay in nearby Buhoma, which offers lodges like Bwindi Lodge, Gorilla Sanctuary Forest Camp and Mahogany Springs.

3. Travel Comfortably to Ruhija

The journey to Ruhija can be long but rewarding. For the best experience, we recommend traveling in 4×4 Land Cruisers, which are perfect for the rugged terrain. Alternatively, you can cut the travel time significantly by flying into Kihihi Airstrip, which is just an hour’s drive to Ruhija.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija

Packing the right gear is essential for a comfortable and successful gorilla trek. Here’s a checklist of what to bring:

• Warm layers: A long-sleeved sweater and trousers for the cool temperatures.
• Waterproof hiking boots: Essential for navigating the forest trails.
• Raincoat: Bwindi is a rainforest and rain can be unpredictable.
• Gardening gloves: Helpful for gripping branches and plants during the trek.
• Bug spray: Protect yourself from insects and mosquitoes.
• Sunscreen: Optional but recommended for sunny days.
• Neutral-colored clothing: Avoid bright colors that may disturb the gorillas and skip black or blue, as they attract tsetse flies.
• Camera and binoculars: Capture incredible moments and enjoy birdwatching along the way.
