Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi vs Mgahinga National Park

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi vs Mgahinga National Park: Which to Choose?

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi vs Mgahinga National Park — If you’re planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda, you’re likely deciding between two iconic destinations: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park. These are the only two parks in Uganda where you can trek mountain gorillas and together they are home to over 50% of the world’s remaining population of mountain gorillas. If you’re still unsure where to go, here’s a comparison to help you choose the perfect destination for your gorilla trekking experience.

The Gorilla Trekking Experience: What Makes Each Park Unique

Both Bwindi and Mgahinga offer incredible gorilla trekking opportunities and you’ll get to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat in both parks. However, there are a few factors to consider that might influence your decision:

• Vegetation & Trekking Environment:
  • Mgahinga National Park is located in the Virunga Mountains, with a landscape dominated by bamboo forests, making it easier to spot the gorillas and take clear photographs. The open terrain allows for a more straightforward trek and better visibility of the gorillas.
  • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a dense tropical rainforest filled with a variety of trees and plants. The thick vegetation can make trekking more challenging and sometimes harder to get clear photos but it adds to the adventure and natural beauty of the experience.

Distance and Trekking Difficulty: What to Expect on the Trail

When it comes to gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park versus Mgahinga National Park, the distance you walk largely depends on which gorilla family is assigned to you on the day of your trek. Both parks allocate gorilla families based on your physical fitness and preferences. If you prefer a shorter trek, simply inform the park authorities when you arrive and they will try to assign you to a family that’s closer. If you’re up for a longer trek, you can request that as well.

However, it’s important to note that while the authorities aim to accommodate your preferences, the behavior of the gorillas might still affect the trek. For example, if the gorillas decide to move further into the forest, you may find yourself walking longer distances regardless of your initial allocation.

Accessibility from Uganda and Rwanda: Getting There

• Both parks are accessible by road or air.
• By road, it’s an 8-9 hour drive from Kampala/Entebbe to Bwindi or Mgahinga. Alternatively, you can drive 4-5 hours from Kigali, Rwanda, making it a more convenient option for international visitors flying into Rwanda.
• Additionally, the East African Tourist Visa allows you to explore both Uganda and Rwanda, providing flexibility if you’re planning to visit both countries.

Accessibility to Other Attractions: Planning Multi-Park Adventures

In terms of proximity to other attractions, Bwindi has the edge over Mgahinga. With just a 2-hour drive, you can visit Queen Elizabeth National Park for an exciting Big Game wildlife safari or take a 4-hour drive to Kibale Forest National Park for chimpanzee trekking. This makes Bwindi a great base for combining gorilla trekking with other thrilling wildlife experiences.

Accommodation Options: Where to Stay in Bwindi and Mgahinga

• Bwindi offers a wider variety of accommodations, from luxury lodges to budget-friendly options. If you’re looking for a super-luxury experience, Bwindi has some of the best lodges in Uganda—including Gorilla Sanctuary Forest Camp, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge and Buhoma Lodge. These lodges provide top-tier services and comfort, perfect for those looking to indulge while on their gorilla trekking journey.
• Mgahinga also offers a range of accommodations but it’s more limited compared to Bwindi and the lodges are typically more basic. Still, you’ll find options that cater to all budgets, including mid-range and budget choices.

Gorilla Families and Permit Availability

• Bwindi is home to 19 habituated gorilla families, meaning there are 152 permits available each day for gorilla trekking. With more gorilla families, it’s easier to find availability, especially during the busy peak season.
• Mgahinga, in contrast, has only one gorilla family, with just 8 permits available daily. This means trekking in Mgahinga is more exclusive but it can be harder to secure permits, particularly during peak periods.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking: When to Visit

Both Bwindi and Mgahinga are open for gorilla trekking year-round. However, as both parks are in tropical rainforests, rain can occur at any time. The best months for trekking are from June to August and December to February, when rainfall is relatively low and the trails are less slippery.

If you happen to visit during the rainy season (March to May and November), expect higher rainfall, which can make trekking more challenging. However, this time also offers discounts on accommodation at certain lodges, making it a more affordable option.

Final Thoughts: Bwindi or Mgahinga?

Both Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park offer incredible experiences for gorilla trekking, with each park providing its own unique advantages.

• Choose Bwindi if you prefer a larger selection of trekking routes and luxury accommodations or want a higher chance of securing permits during peak times.
• Opt for Mgahinga if you’re after a more exclusive experience with fewer trekkers and don’t mind the more challenging vegetation.
