Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga National Park: An Unforgettable Adventure

Planning a visit to Uganda for gorilla trekking in Mgahinga National Park? Mgahinga is one of the top destinations for gorilla safaris in Uganda, offering a rare opportunity to trek mountain gorillas in the stunning forests of the southwestern part of the country, near the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mgahinga National Park is part of the famous Virunga Mountain Range, which spans Rwanda, Congo and Uganda and is renowned for its mountain gorillas. This is the smallest national park in Uganda, bordered by Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Virunga National Park in Congo and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. Mgahinga is home to three volcanic mountains: Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabyinyo and Mount Muhabura, which are part of the Virunga range. The park is also known for its lush rainforests, which host both the endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.

How is Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga National Park?

Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga offers a unique experience. The park is home to just one gorilla family, the Nyakagezi Gorilla Group, which is available for trekking. Like in other gorilla trekking destinations in Uganda, it’s essential to book your trek in advance as only 8 permits are available each day. This ensures a more exclusive experience with the gorillas.

The trek typically starts in the morning with a briefing at the park headquarters, where you’ll learn the rules and guidelines for gorilla trekking. Afterward, you’ll embark on a thrilling hike through the dense forest, guided by experienced rangers and guides. The search for the gorillas can take anywhere from 2 to 5 hours, depending on where the family is located.
