3. Plan Your Travel Comfortably
Getting to Nkuringo can be an adventure in itself and how you choose to travel can make a big difference:
- By Road: A 4×4 Land Cruiser is recommended for a smooth and comfortable journey on the rugged roads leading to Nkuringo. The drive from Kampala or Entebbe takes about 8–9 hours.
- By Air: For a faster and less tiring option, you can fly to Kisoro Airstrip, which is just a 2-hour drive from Nkuringo. Flying drastically reduces travel time compared to the long drive from Entebbe or Kampala.

Essential Gear and Clothing for Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo
Preparing for gorilla trekking in the Nkuringo region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park requires the right gear to ensure a comfortable and safe experience. Here’s a list of recommended items to wear and carry:
1. Long-Sleeved Sweater or Shirt
The weather in Bwindi can get chilly, especially in the early mornings and evenings. A lightweight, long-sleeved sweater or shirt will keep you warm and protect your arms from scratches.
2. Long Trousers (Two Pairs)
Wear long trousers to protect your legs from insect bites, thorns and nettles while trekking through the dense forest. It’s a good idea to have a second pair in case one gets wet or muddy.
3. Waterproof Hiking Boots
Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential for navigating the forest’s uneven and sometimes slippery terrain. Comfortable and durable footwear will make your trek much easier.
4. Raincoat or Poncho
Bwindi is a tropical rainforest, meaning rain can occur at any time. A lightweight raincoat or poncho is a must to stay dry during your trek.
5. Gardening Gloves
Gardening gloves are helpful for gripping trees and branches as you navigate the trails. They also protect your hands from thorns and stinging plants.
6. Hat and Sunglasses
While optional, a hat and sunglasses can protect you from the sun, especially during the dry season.
7. Insect Repellent
Carry mosquito repellent to protect yourself from insect bites, as the forest is home to various bugs.
8. Sunscreen
If you’re trekking during the dry season, sunscreen can protect your skin from sunburn.
9. Neutral-Colored Clothing
Avoid wearing bright colors that may startle the gorillas. Also, avoid black and blue clothing as these colors attract tsetse flies. Neutral tones such as brown, green or khaki are highly recommended.
10. Binoculars
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is teeming with birdlife and other primates. A good pair of binoculars will enhance your wildlife-watching experience.
11. Camera (No Flash)
