Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo vs. Buhoma

Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo vs. Buhoma: Which Sector Should You Choose?

Are you planning to visit Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for gorilla trekking and wondering whether to choose Nkuringo or Buhoma? This guide will help you compare both sectors of Bwindi and decide which one is best for your trekking experience.

Explore Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is divided into two main regions: the southern and northern parts. The southern part includes the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors, while the northern part consists of the Ruhija and Buhoma sectors. Bwindi is one of the four national parks globally that are home to the endangered mountain gorillas, along with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda), Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) and Virunga National Park (DR Congo). The park itself is a biodiversity hotspot, with over 350 bird species, 310 butterfly species, 200 tree species and 88 moth species, among other wildlife, including chimpanzees and L’Hoest’s monkeys.

Comparing Nkuringo and Buhoma for Gorilla Trekking

Nkuringo Sector: A Challenging Trek for Adventurers

Nkuringo is located in the southern part of Bwindi and is known for its rugged, steep terrain. It’s ideal for those who enjoy a more physically challenging trek. Nkuringo is home to three gorilla families: the Nkuringo family, Bushaho family and Christmas family. Sometimes, the Bushaho family moves between the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors, so you may encounter them in either location. This sector is perfect for adventurous trekkers looking for a more strenuous and rewarding hike.

Buhoma Sector: Easier Trekking and More Family Choices

Buhoma is located in the northern part of Bwindi and is the park’s most popular and well-established sector. It was the first sector to be habituated for gorilla trekking in 1993, shortly after the park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Buhoma is home to four gorilla families: Mubare (the oldest), Habinyanja, Rushegura and Katwe. The terrain in Buhoma is generally easier, making it suitable for those seeking a less strenuous trek.

Key Differences Between Nkuringo and Buhoma

Accessibility: How Easy Is It to Get There?

Buhoma is more easily accessible compared to Nkuringo. You can reach Buhoma by taking a turn-off from the Kabale-Kisoro road and it’s well-signposted. Nkuringo is reached by a different route along the Kabale-Kisoro highway. For both sectors, the nearest airstrips are Kihihi (for Buhoma) and Kisoro (for Nkuringo), with Kihihi being a bit more affordable and offering more flexible flight schedules due to better weather conditions.

Accommodation: Where to Stay in Buhoma or Nkuringo

Both Nkuringo and Buhoma have a range of accommodation options, from budget to luxury lodges. However, Buhoma is known for its higher-end options, including internationally recognized lodges like Gorilla Forest Camp, Buhoma Lodge and Bwindi Lodge. These lodges are considered some of the best in the region and offer excellent services. Nkuringo also has comfortable options but they tend to be more budget-friendly and less luxurious than those in Buhoma.

Gorilla Families and Permits: Availability and Options

Buhoma has more gorilla families, making it easier to secure a permit for your trek. With four families in Buhoma, you have a greater chance of finding availability, with more daily permits available. Nkuringo, on the other hand, has only three families, so permits can be harder to come by.

Trekking Experience: Physical Challenge vs. Comfort

Both sectors offer incredible gorilla trekking experiences with a 98% success rate of spotting mountain gorillas. However, Nkuringo is unique in that it offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience, where you can spend up to four hours with the gorillas, unlike the standard one-hour encounter in both sectors. This experience is available in Nkuringo and the nearby Rushaga sector. Additionally, while both sectors offer great trekking, Nkuringo’s steeper terrain and challenging hikes attract adventurers and experienced trekkers looking for a more demanding adventure.

Trekking Distance: How Far Will You Walk?

The distance you walk to encounter the gorillas depends on the gorilla family assigned to you. Both sectors assign families based on your physical fitness level and preferences. You can request a shorter trek and the park authorities will try to accommodate you. However, the gorillas’ movements may require you to walk further, regardless of the family assigned.

Best Time to Visit Bwindi for Gorilla Trekking

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is open for trekking year-round, though the best months are June to August and December to February, when rainfall is lower and the trails are less slippery. If you visit during the rainy months (March to May or November), you may face more challenging conditions but you might also find discounts on accommodations.
