Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo vs. Ruhija

Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo vs. Ruhija: Which Bwindi Sector Should You Choose?

If you’re planning to visit Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park for gorilla trekking, you’ll face the exciting challenge of choosing the right sector for your adventure. In this guide, we’ll compare two of the park’s most popular trekking sectors: Nkuringo and Ruhija, helping you decide which one is the best fit for your gorilla trekking experience.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to one of the last remaining populations of the endangered mountain gorillas. The park is divided into two regions: the southern section, which includes Rushaga and Nkuringo and the northern section, which includes Ruhija and Buhoma. The forest is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasting incredible biodiversity, including 350 bird species, 200 tree species, 51 reptiles and of course, the iconic mountain gorillas.

Overview of Nkuringo and Ruhija Gorilla Trekking Sectors

Nkuringo Sector: Challenging Treks and Fewer Crowds

Located in the southern part of Bwindi, the Nkuringo sector is known for its challenging and rewarding hikes. Nkuringo is home to three gorilla families: the Nkuringo, Bushaho and Christmas families. Occasionally, the Bushaho family migrates from Rushaga to Nkuringo, offering trekkers a chance to see them in either sector. The hikes here are more strenuous, making it ideal for adventurers and seasoned hikers seeking a physically demanding trek.

Ruhija Sector: Scenic Trails and Gentle Slopes

Ruhija, located in the eastern part of Bwindi, is renowned for its stunning scenery and variety of trekking options. It is home to four gorilla families: Bitukura, Kyanguriro, Mukiza and Oruzogo. The sector is situated at a high altitude (over 2,350 meters above sea level), making it the coldest part of the park. Ruhija is an excellent choice for both short and long hikes and its lush environment is also perfect for birdwatching and nature walks, such as the popular Rwamunyonyi Peak trail.

Nkuringo vs. Ruhija: Key Differences to Help You Decide

1. Accessibility: Which Sector Is Easier to Reach?

• Nkuringo: To reach Nkuringo by road, you’ll take a turnoff at Muko along the Kabale-Kisoro Highway, which can be a longer journey.
• Ruhija: Ruhija is easier to access from the Kabale-Kisoro road and it’s generally closer to main roads, making the journey shorter. Both sectors are accessible by air via Kihihi Airstrip for Ruhija and Kisoro Airstrip for Nkuringo, with a drive time of about 1-2 hours from each airstrip.

2. Lodging Options: Where to Stay in Nkuringo and Ruhija

Both Nkuringo and Ruhija offer a variety of accommodations ranging from budget to luxury. However, Nkuringo is known for having more luxurious lodging options, with well-established lodges offering a higher standard of comfort. Ruhija, on the other hand, has more mid-range and budget-friendly options, though still plenty of comfortable choices for those seeking a peaceful stay in the forest.

3. Gorilla Families and Permit Availability

Ruhija has more gorilla families (four) compared to Nkuringo (three), which means there are more permits available in Ruhija. If you’re looking for a higher chance of securing a permit for a specific trek, Ruhija might be the better option.

4. Trekking Experience: Strenuous vs. Moderate Hikes

Both Nkuringo and Ruhija offer exceptional gorilla trekking experiences. You’ll have about a 98% chance of seeing the mountain gorillas in either sector. However, Nkuringo stands out for its Gorilla Habituation Experience, allowing trekkers to spend up to four hours with the gorillas, which is a unique opportunity offered only in the southern sectors of Bwindi.

For those seeking a more challenging adventure, Nkuringo’s steeper terrain provides a more demanding trek, ideal for hikers looking for a physical challenge. In contrast, Ruhija offers relatively easier trekking options, making it suitable for those who prefer a less strenuous experience.

5. Distance Walked: How Long Are the Treks?

The distance you’ll walk depends on the allocated gorilla family. Both sectors offer options for short, medium and long treks. If you’re hoping for a shorter trek, you can request a family that’s closer to the starting point. However, the gorillas can move and sometimes you may have to walk longer distances, regardless of the sector.

6. Best Time to Visit Nkuringo and Ruhija for Gorilla Trekking

Bwindi is open for trekking year-round but the best months to visit are from June to August and December to February, when the weather is drier and the trails are less slippery. However, the park is a tropical rainforest and rain can occur at any time, so be prepared for wet conditions. Travelling during the wet months (March to May, November) can often mean lower rates for accommodation.
