Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga vs Buhoma

Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga vs Buhoma: Which Sector Should You Choose?

If you’re planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, you’ll have to decide between two popular sectors: Rushaga and Buhoma. Both offer unforgettable experiences but they come with distinct features that might influence your choice. Let’s dive into the differences between these two sectors to help you decide the best one for your trek.

Discover Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the few places in the world where you can see the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. It’s home to half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas and boasts rich biodiversity, including 350 bird species, 310 butterfly species, 200 tree species and 120 mammal species, including chimpanzees and L’Hoest’s monkeys. The park is split into two main regions: the northern sector (Buhoma) and the southern sector (Rushaga), each offering unique experiences.

Rushaga Sector: Gorilla Families and Habituation Experience

Located in the southern part of Bwindi, Rushaga is home to the largest number of gorilla families—eight in total, including Rwigi, Muchunguzi, Busingye, Bweza, Nshongi, Mishaya and Kahungye. This makes Rushaga the perfect choice for those wanting to maximize their chances of seeing a variety of gorillas. It’s also the only sector in Bwindi that offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience, where you can spend extended time with the gorillas (up to 4 hours), learning about their behavior and conservation efforts.

Rushaga is easily accessible via Kisoro or from Kigali (a 4-5 hour drive), making it convenient for both international and local travelers. For a more adventurous and strenuous trek, Rushaga’s hilly terrain offers a challenge, ideal for hikers and those looking for a physical challenge.

Buhoma Sector: The Historic Gateway to Gorilla Trekking

Buhoma, located in the northern part of Bwindi, is the first sector where gorilla trekking began in 1993. It’s home to the Mubare family, the oldest gorilla family in Bwindi, as well as three other families: Habinyanja, Rushegura and Katwe. Buhoma is known for its relatively easier and shorter treks, making it suitable for beginners or those who prefer a less strenuous hiking experience.

Buhoma’s popularity makes it the most visited sector and it’s home to some of Bwindi’s best luxury lodges, such as Gorilla Forest Camp, Buhoma Lodge and Bwindi Lodge. If you’re looking for a more luxurious experience combined with gorilla trekking, Buhoma is the place to be.

Rushaga vs Buhoma: Key Differences to Consider

• Accessibility: Buhoma is more accessible, especially for those traveling from Kampala or the Kabale region. The road to Buhoma is straightforward, while getting to Rushaga requires turning off the Kabale-Kisoro Highway at Muko, making it a longer drive.
• Gorilla Families and Permits: Rushaga boasts more gorilla families (8 in total) compared to Buhoma’s 4 families, meaning more permits are available in Rushaga daily. This makes Rushaga a great option if you’re traveling during peak seasons.
• Trekking Experience: Buhoma offers easier hikes, ideal for first-timers or those seeking a more leisurely trek. Rushaga, on the other hand, features steeper and more challenging terrain, making it perfect for adventurers or those looking for a more strenuous experience.
• Gorilla Habituation Experience: Rushaga is the only sector in Bwindi where you can engage in the Gorilla Habituation Experience, spending 4 hours with the gorillas rather than the standard 1 hour. This is an exceptional opportunity for those looking for a deeper connection with these magnificent creatures.
• Lodging Options: Buhoma is known for its luxury lodges, offering top-notch accommodation and services. Rushaga also has a variety of lodge options, from budget to mid-range but it’s less focused on luxury compared to Buhoma.

Trekking Distance: Choosing Short or Long Routes

Both Rushaga and Buhoma offer a range of trekking options based on your physical fitness and preferences. Trekking distances vary depending on the gorilla family allocated to you. If you prefer a shorter trek, you can request a family that’s located closer to the starting point. However, be aware that gorillas may move further into the forest, which could extend your trek time.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is open for trekking year-round but the best months to visit are from June to August and December to February. During these months, the weather is relatively dry, making the trails less slippery and more comfortable for trekking. If you visit between March and May or November, expect higher rainfall, which could make the trekking experience more challenging but also offers discounts at some lodges.
