Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga vs. Nkuringo

Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga vs. Nkuringo: What’s the Difference?

Are you planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and wondering whether to trek in Rushaga or Nkuringo? Both sectors offer incredible opportunities to see the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat but each comes with its own unique experiences. In this guide, we’ll compare the two sectors and help you decide which one is best for your trek.

About Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, located in southwestern Uganda, is one of only four national parks in the world that are home to the endangered mountain gorillas. The park is divided into two main areas: the southern region, which includes Rushaga and Nkuringo and the northern region, home to Ruhija and Buhoma.

Bwindi is not only a haven for mountain gorillas but also boasts a diverse ecosystem, with over 350 species of birds, 310 butterflies, 120 mammals and various other wildlife. Aside from gorillas, you can also encounter chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys and many other fascinating species.

Rushaga Sector of Bwindi

Rushaga, located in the southern part of Bwindi, is home to the largest number of gorilla families, with 8 groups available for trekking. These include Rwigi, Muchunguzi, Busingye, Bweza, Nshongi, Mishaya and Kahungye, making it the ideal spot for those who want a higher chance of securing a permit.

Rushaga is also the only sector in Bwindi that offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience, where you can spend up to 4 hours with the gorillas, learning about their behavior and interacting with them more closely.

Rushaga is easily accessible from Kisoro and for travelers coming from Kigali, it’s about a 4-5 hour drive. The terrain here is a bit easier, which makes trekking relatively less strenuous compared to other sectors.

Nkuringo Sector of Bwindi

Nkuringo, also in the southern region of Bwindi, is known for its challenging treks and stunning mountain views. This sector is home to 3 gorilla families: the Nkuringo, Bushaho and Christmas families. The Bushaho family sometimes crosses over from Rushaga, making them accessible from both sectors.

Nkuringo is the perfect destination for those looking for a more strenuous and rewarding hiking experience. The steep terrain offers a more challenging trek, making it popular among adventurers and those in search of a physical challenge.

Comparing Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga vs. Nkuringo

1. Accessibility

• Rushaga is closer and easier to reach, especially for travelers coming from Kisoro or Kigali.
• Nkuringo can be accessed via Kisoro but the road conditions and the steep terrain may make it a bit more challenging, especially for those traveling by road.

2. Gorilla Families

• Rushaga offers more options, with 8 gorilla families available for trekking, giving you a better chance of securing a permit.
• Nkuringo has fewer families (3) but these families are just as captivating. You might even have a chance to see the Bushaho family if they’ve crossed over from Rushaga.

3. Trekking Difficulty

• Rushaga tends to offer slightly easier treks due to the more accessible terrain, making it a great choice for those who want a less physically demanding experience.
• Nkuringo, on the other hand, offers more challenging hikes, ideal for those who enjoy an adventurous trek through steep and rugged terrain.

4. Accommodation

Both sectors offer a variety of accommodations ranging from budget to luxury. However, Nkuringo is particularly known for its high-end lodges, including Gorilla Heights Lodge, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge and Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge. These lodges provide stunning views and luxurious amenities for those seeking a more comfortable stay.

5. Gorilla Trekking Experience

Regardless of whether you choose Rushaga or Nkuringo, both sectors offer the opportunity to see the mountain gorillas with an 98% chance of success. The real difference lies in the Gorilla Habituation Experience offered exclusively in Rushaga, where you can spend 4 hours with the gorillas, compared to the usual 1 hour in other sectors. However, if you are up for a physical challenge and prefer more rugged hiking, Nkuringo offers a more adventurous experience.

6. Distance Walked

The distance you will walk depends on the family assigned to you. Both sectors tailor the trek to your fitness level. You can request a shorter trek but note that the gorillas’ movements may sometimes affect the distance you need to cover.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga and Nkuringo

Bwindi is open for trekking year-round but since it’s a tropical rainforest, rain can occur at any time. The best months to visit for dry weather are from June to August and December to February, when the trails are less slippery and more manageable.

If you’re planning to visit during the wet season (March to May or November), you might find discounts on accommodation but be prepared for rain and more challenging trekking conditions.
