Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga vs Ruhija

Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga vs Ruhija: A Complete Comparison for Your Safari

Planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest but unsure whether to trek in Rushaga or Ruhija? This guide breaks down the key differences between these two sectors of Bwindi, helping you choose the best option for your dream safari.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: A Unique Mountain Gorilla Habitat

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to the endangered mountain gorillas. This park is one of only four places in the world where these magnificent creatures can be found, alongside Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the DR Congo. With diverse ecosystems, Bwindi is a biodiversity hotspot, hosting over 350 bird species, 310 butterflies, 200 tree species and various mammals, including chimpanzees and L’Hoest’s monkeys.

Bwindi is divided into two main parts for trekking: the southern and northern sectors. In this article, we’ll explore the differences between Rushaga (southern) and Ruhija (northern), two of the most popular trekking regions.

Rushaga Sector: The Gorilla Family Hub and Adventure Choice

Rushaga is located in the southern part of Bwindi and is home to a total of 8 gorilla families, making it the most family-packed sector in the park. Some of these families include Rwigi, Muchunguzi, Busingye, Bweza, Nshongi, Mishaya and Kahungye. This sector is particularly popular for those who wish to enjoy an easier trek, thanks to its more accessible terrain.

Rushaga is a 4-5 hour drive from Kigali and can also be accessed via Kisoro. If you’re looking for an immersive experience, Rushaga is the only sector offering the Gorilla Habituation Experience, where visitors can spend up to 4 hours with a gorilla group—an extraordinary opportunity to connect more deeply with these fascinating creatures.

Ruhija Sector: Ideal for Adventurers and Birdwatchers

Located in the eastern part of Bwindi, Ruhija is known for its cool, high-altitude climate (over 2,350 meters above sea level). This sector offers a mix of long and short hikes, making it ideal for trekkers of all abilities. Ruhija is home to 4 gorilla families: Bitukura, Kyanguriro, Mukiza and Oruzogo.

In addition to gorilla trekking, Ruhija is a fantastic destination for birdwatching and nature walks. The Rwamunyonyi Peak offers breathtaking views and is a popular hiking spot in the region. Ruhija also features other wildlife, including primates and mammals like elephants and antelopes.

Key Differences Between Rushaga and Ruhija Sectors

• Accessibility: Ruhija is easier to reach from Kabale-Kisoro road, with signposted directions leading you directly to the sector. Rushaga, on the other hand, requires turning off at Muko along the same highway. For air travel, Kihihi Airstrip serves Ruhija, while Kisoro Airstrip is closest to Rushaga. Flights to Kihihi are often more frequent and affordable due to better weather conditions.
• Gorilla Families and Permits: Rushaga has more gorilla families, meaning more permits are available daily. This makes it easier to secure a spot for trekking. Ruhija, with its fewer families, may offer a more intimate experience but has fewer permits available.
• Trekking Experience: Both sectors guarantee an incredible gorilla trekking experience, with a 98% chance of seeing gorillas. However, Rushaga offers a unique Gorilla Habituation Experience, allowing you to spend up to 4 hours with the gorillas, unlike Ruhija. Rushaga is also known for steeper terrain, which may appeal to more adventurous hikers looking for a challenge.
• Distance Walked: The distance you’ll trek depends on the gorilla family assigned to you. Both sectors offer short to long treks, with distances based on your fitness level. It’s important to note that gorilla behavior can influence the trek, as they may move farther from their usual habitat, extending the walk.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga and Ruhija

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is possible year-round but the best times are June to August and December to February, as these months experience lower rainfall, making the trails less slippery. However, trekking during the wet season (March to May or November) can offer discounts at some lodges and fewer tourists.
