Gateway to Adventure: Gatuna Border Overview

Gatuna is a bustling border town in northern Rwanda, located just across from Katuna in Uganda. Known as Rwanda’s busiest border crossing, Gatuna plays a vital role in the import and export of goods, as much of Rwanda’s trade passes through Uganda. Thanks to increasing commercial and tourist traffic, Gatuna is rapidly growing. The border operates 24 hours a day and is about 80 kilometers (approximately 3-4 hours’ drive) north of Kigali, Rwanda’s capital. From Gatuna, you can easily reach the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, famous for its incredible gorilla trekking experiences.

Why Visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park?

Nestled in the southwestern part of Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that shares a border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is divided into several sectors—Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija and Nkuringo—each offering unique trekking experiences. Whether you’re celebrating a honeymoon, birthday or anniversary, Bwindi is an unforgettable destination.

Top Things to Do in Bwindi from Gatuna Border

1. Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija Sector

Gorilla trekking is the highlight of any visit to Bwindi. This adventure involves guided hikes through the forest to observe habituated mountain gorilla families. Each morning, skilled trackers venture into the forest, using natural signs and sounds to locate the gorillas. Once they find them, they communicate with the park headquarters and after a briefing on the do’s and don’ts, your guides will lead you on the trek. With a 99% chance of encountering these magnificent creatures, gorilla trekking is a truly life-changing experience.

The Ruhija sector is particularly accessible, with a gentler terrain compared to Rushaga and Nkuringo. Here, you’ll find four gorilla families—Bitukura, Oruzogo, Mukiza and Kyaguriro—all open for trekking. To secure your spot, it’s essential to book your gorilla trekking permit in advance. The costs are as follows:

• USD 800 for non-residents
• USD 700 for foreign residents
• Shs 300,000 for East African citizens

Each permit allows for one hour of viewing the gorillas, making it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

2. Experience Batwa Culture

A visit to the Batwa community is another enriching experience during your stay in Ruhija. The Batwa people, often referred to as pygmies, were the original inhabitants of Bwindi Forest. Following their relocation to nearby communities to aid gorilla conservation, they now offer cultural experiences to visitors. During these experiences, you’ll learn about their traditional forest life, including how they harvested honey and hunted. Enjoy lively dance performances and gain insights into their adaptation to life outside the forest.

Additionally, consider visiting local women’s craft groups, community schools and other community initiatives. If you’re able, donations of clothes or school supplies for local children are greatly appreciated and welcomed.

3. Forest and Nature Walks

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the oldest tropical forests in the world, having existed for over 250,000 years. With its dense canopy and ancient tree species, the park offers an exhilarating backdrop for nature walks. During your walking safari, you’ll have the chance to explore different tree species, spot various birds and, if you’re lucky, encounter some of the park’s wildlife, including rare forest elephants, monkeys and baboons.

The Mubwindi swamp walk and trails leading to streams and waterfalls are popular routes that showcase the park’s natural beauty and biodiversity.
