What Is Gorilla Trekking? A Thrilling Wildlife Experience

Gorilla trekking is one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife experiences. Hiking through dense, challenging terrain in search of these endangered creatures is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that every wildlife lover should have on their bucket list. Despite the physical demands of the trek—ranging from steep climbs to walking through thick vegetation, swamps and rivers—the opportunity to observe gorillas in the wild is unmatched.

You can trek to see mountain gorillas in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. For a deeper experience, opt for the Gorilla Habituation program in Bwindi Forest, where you can spend up to four hours with the gorillas, instead of the usual one hour allowed in traditional trekking.

Where to Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa: Top National Parks

When trekking gorillas from Nairobi, you’ll travel to the four national parks that are home to the remaining mountain gorillas:

• Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda
• Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda
• Virunga National Park in the DRC

In the DRC, there’s also the opportunity to trek Lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park.

To join a trek in any of these parks, you must have a gorilla permit. Due to high demand, especially during peak seasons (June to September), we recommend booking your trip at least 5 months in advance to secure your permits and ensure availability.

Gorilla Trekking Permit Costs in Uganda: What You Need to Know

• $800 per person for foreign non-residents
• $700 per person for residents
• $80 for East African citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi and South Sudan)

These fees give you one hour with the gorillas in either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Uganda is home to 17 habituated gorilla families, so 136 permits are available every day.

If you prefer to spend more time with the gorillas, consider the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Forest, which allows up to 4 hours of interaction with semi-habituated gorillas and costs $1500 per person.

Permits can be booked directly with the Uganda Wildlife Authority or through trusted tour operators like Trek Africa Gorillas.

Age Requirements and Accessibility for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

The minimum age for trekking is 15 years and the maximum is 85 years, depending on your fitness level. For elderly trekkers, sedan chair carriers are available in Bwindi Forest, which are carried by porters to and from the forest. The cost of this service ranges from $400-$500 and can be arranged in advance or on the day of your trek.

Gorilla Trekking Cancellation Policy: What to Expect

In case of cancellation, there are no refunds if you miss your trek from 0 to 8 days before the trek date.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda: When to Plan Your Trip

Gorilla trekking can be done year-round but the best time to visit is during the drier months of January, February, June and early September. The weather is more predictable, making it easier to navigate the trails and the vegetation is less dense, giving you better visibility of the gorillas.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda: Essential Gear Checklist

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is an adventure you’ll never forget but it requires careful preparation. The forest trails can be muddy and steep, especially when it rains, so packing the right gear is crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Here’s a list of essential items to pack for your gorilla trek:

• Comfortable, durable walking boots: The terrain can be challenging, so sturdy shoes with good grip are a must.
• Socks: Pack a few pairs of moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet comfortable.
• Insect Repellent: Protect yourself from insects in the forest, including biting ants and mosquitoes.
• Torch/Flashlight: A headlamp or flashlight with spare batteries will be helpful for early morning or late evening treks.
• Wet Wipes: A quick way to freshen up during your trek or in case there are limited facilities.
• Water Bottle: Stay hydrated throughout the hike. Make sure you carry enough water for the day.
• Camera and Lenses: Don’t miss capturing the stunning wildlife and your memorable moments.
• Long Sleeve Shirt & Lightweight Trousers: Protect yourself from undergrowth, stinging nettles and insects with breathable, lightweight clothing.
• Gardening Gloves: Handy for navigating through the forest and offering some extra protection when handling vegetation.
• Sandals or Flip-Flops: Ideal for relaxing after the trek or when you’re at your accommodation.
• Hat and Sunscreen: The sun can be strong, so protect your face and neck.
• Rain Jacket: Be prepared for sudden showers, especially during the rainy seasons.
• Sweater/Fleece: The mornings and evenings can be chilly, so pack something warm.
• Swimwear: If you plan to relax at a lodge with a pool, swimwear is a must.
