Gorilla Trekking in Uganda, Rwanda and Africa: Your Complete Planning Guide

Are you planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Africa? This comprehensive guide to gorilla trekking in Uganda, Rwanda and Africa will help you plan your dream trek and ensure a smooth booking process. Gorilla trekking is one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences you can have, attracting travelers from all over the world to witness the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Despite the costs, effort and challenging hikes, this adventure is well worth it.

During a gorilla trek, you’ll hike through dense forests, navigate difficult terrain, cross rivers and even trek through swamps in search of these magnificent apes. The activity requires a good level of fitness and while it can be demanding, the reward of spending an hour with the gorillas in the wild is beyond compare. For those looking to spend even more time with the gorillas, the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Forest offers an extended 4-hour encounter with these incredible creatures.

Where to Experience Gorilla Trekking in Africa

Gorilla trekking can be experienced in three African countries: Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. These countries are home to the remaining mountain gorillas, found in the following national parks:

• Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
• Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
• Congo: Virunga National Park (for mountain gorillas) and Kahuzi-Biega National Park (for lowland gorillas)

To trek in any of these parks, you will need a gorilla permit, which grants you access to the park and allows you to track the gorillas. It’s essential to book your gorilla trek well in advance, especially if you plan to visit during peak seasons (June to September). Trek Africa Gorillas recommends booking at least 5 months ahead to secure your permits and avoid any last-minute surprises.
