Gorilla Trekking in Uganda with a Grandparent: A Perfect Experience for All Ages

Planning a memorable Uganda safari with your grandparent? Whether you’re looking to share the awe-inspiring experience of gorilla trekking or just enjoy the natural beauty of Uganda’s wildlife, Trek Africa Gorillas can help make your journey unforgettable. Gorilla trekking is accessible to all ages, with no upper age limit, so you and your grandparent can embark on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure together.

Is Gorilla Trekking Suitable for Grandparents?

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is an extraordinary experience and it’s possible for grandparents of all ages to take part. While there’s no official age limit for gorilla trekking, some elderly travelers may require extra assistance, especially when navigating the forest trails. To support you, Trek Africa Gorillas offers several options for making the trek easier.

For a more comfortable experience, you can hire a porter to carry your grandparent’s backpack and offer a helping hand along the way. Alternatively, a sedan chair service, which costs about $300, can be arranged to carry elderly visitors to and from the gorilla viewing area. This service ensures your grandparent can enjoy the trek without the physical strain of the hike. We’ve had visitors in their 70s and even 80s successfully complete the trek and witness the majestic gorillas.

How to Prepare a Grandparent for Gorilla Trekking

Though the trek can be challenging, elderly visitors can prepare by staying active in the months leading up to the trip. Gentle hikes, long walks and light exercises are great ways to build stamina and get used to the kind of movement required for the trek. Be sure to pack the right gear, including hiking boots, gloves, a rain jacket and a walking stick, all of which will help make the experience more comfortable.

Travel Tips: Getting to Bwindi with a Grandparent

When planning a safari with a grandparent, it’s important to consider their comfort during travel. The drive from Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park can take 8 to 9 hours, which can be tiring for the elderly. To make the journey more manageable, consider booking a domestic flight from Entebbe or starting your tour in Kigali, Rwanda. Domestic flights shorten the travel time to just about one hour, allowing your grandparent to rest before the gorilla trek the next day. If a flight isn’t an option, you can plan for regular breaks along the way.

Additionally, it’s essential to address safety concerns for elderly travelers. Rest assured, security is a top priority at Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks, with armed rangers accompanying each trekking group. These rangers ensure your safety from any wildlife encounters during your trek, providing peace of mind.

Where to Stay: Lodges and Camps for Elderly Guests

The accommodation around the gorilla parks is excellent and suitable for elderly guests. From ultra-luxury lodges to mid-range and budget options, there’s something for every preference and budget. Most properties are designed to accommodate all guests, including those with mobility challenges.

For a more comfortable stay, you can choose from luxurious lodges such as Mahogany Springs Lodge and Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, which provide premium service and a peaceful atmosphere. For those on a budget, options like Buhoma Community Camp offer simpler accommodations without sacrificing comfort. Your guide will assist in choosing the best accommodation based on your grandparent’s needs and the trekking sector.

When Is the Best Time for Gorilla Trekking with a Grandparent?

The best time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking is during the dry months of January, February and from June to early September. During these months, the forest trails are less slippery, making the trek easier for older visitors. The dry weather also provides better visibility for spotting the gorillas.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi for Elderly Travelers

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it one of the best places to visit these magnificent creatures in the wild. Bwindi is divided into four trekking sectors: Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija and Nkuringo. Each sector offers unique opportunities to see the gorillas and your guide can help choose the best sector based on the availability of permits and your grandparent’s comfort.

To trek with the gorillas, you’ll need a valid gorilla permit. Since permits are limited to just eight people per gorilla family each day, it’s essential to secure your permit in advance. At Trek Africa Gorillas, we can assist with securing your permits and booking your gorilla trek for a seamless experience.
