Gorilla Trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Are you planning to visit Uganda and experience the thrill of gorilla trekking? One of the top activities on your list should be trekking the mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in the stunning southwest of Uganda. Known for its rich biodiversity, Bwindi is one of only two places in the world where you can trek mountain gorillas, the other being Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. Other nearby parks that also shelter these endangered species are Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Why Trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park?

Bwindi is one of Africa’s oldest forests, home to an astonishing array of wildlife. The park is a biodiversity hotspot, hosting over 350 species of birds, 310 butterflies, 200 species of trees, 51 reptiles and 120 mammal species, including chimpanzees and L’Hoest’s monkeys. However, the main attraction is the mountain gorillas. With a global population of just 1,064 mountain gorillas, Bwindi is home to half of these majestic creatures. The park is also famous for its 15+ habituated gorilla families, each available for trekking, with 8 permits allocated for each group every day.

How Does Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Work?

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is conducted in four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga. These sectors are spread across different parts of the park, each with unique access points and trekking experiences.

• Buhoma and Ruhija are located in the northern and northeastern parts of the park, making them easily accessible for those also visiting Queen Elizabeth National Park, where you can combine game drives with your gorilla trekking experience.
• In the southern part of the park, you’ll find Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors, which are close to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park—perfect for those wanting to experience golden monkey tracking in addition to gorilla trekking. Rushaga, in particular, has the largest number of gorilla families available for trekking.

When is the Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?

The best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the drier months, which are typically from January to February and June to early September. These months offer the most favorable weather for trekking, making it easier to travel to the park and providing clearer views of the gorillas, as the vegetation is less dense during this period.

What to Wear for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

If you’re wondering what to pack for your gorilla trek, here’s a helpful guide to make your adventure more comfortable:

• Long-sleeve shirt or sweater: The mornings and evenings in the forest can be chilly, so a long-sleeve layer is essential.
• Two pairs of long trousers: These will protect your legs from branches, thorns and insects as you trek through the forest.
• Waterproof hiking boots: Since the trails can be muddy, sturdy, waterproof boots are a must for traction and comfort.
• Hat and sunglasses: These are optional but can be helpful for sun protection, especially if you’re trekking during the hotter months.
• Camera with extra batteries: You’ll want to capture the moment with the gorillas! Just remember to turn off your flash to avoid disturbing the animals.
• Binoculars: Bwindi is home to diverse wildlife, including rare birds and primates, so binoculars are great for birdwatching.
• Gardening gloves: These will protect your hands when holding onto branches or trees as you navigate the forest.
• Raincoat: Bwindi is a rainforest, so rain can be unpredictable. Be sure to pack a rain jacket just in case.
• Mosquito repellent: The forest environment means the presence of insects, so keep yourself protected from bites.
• Sunscreen: Depending on the season, the sun can be intense, so sunscreen will help prevent sunburns.

Additionally, avoid wearing very bright colors or shades of black and blue, as these can either scare the gorillas or attract tsetse flies. Neutral colors like khaki, brown or green are best.
