Discover Rwanda and Uganda – Your Gateway to Gorilla Trekking

Rwanda, often called the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” is a landlocked country known for its clean organized cities and stunning landscapes. It shares borders with Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, Burundi to the south and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. Rwanda’s dramatic scenery, especially in the northern, western and eastern regions, sets the perfect backdrop for your journey into Uganda, where you’ll encounter mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Why Choose Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking in Africa is a unique and unforgettable experience. The thrill of hiking through thick forest terrain to meet endangered mountain gorillas is a major highlight for wildlife enthusiasts and travelers alike. Though it can be physically demanding – involving steep climbs, thick vegetation and crossing rivers – the reward is seeing these magnificent creatures in the wild. Whether you’re trekking in Uganda, Rwanda or the Congo, encountering gorillas in their natural habitat is a bucket-list experience.

For a more immersive experience, you can opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience, which allows you to spend up to four hours with the gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi Forest. This is ideal for those wanting a deeper connection with these incredible animals.

Where Does Gorilla Trekking Take Place?

Gorilla trekking is available in three African countries: Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These countries are home to the only remaining mountain gorillas in the world.

In Uganda, you can trek through:

• Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
• Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

In Rwanda, you’ll find:

• Volcanoes National Park

And in Congo, the gorillas are found in:

• Virunga National Park (for mountain gorillas)
• Kahuzi-Biega National Park (for lowland gorillas)

To embark on a trek at any of these national parks, a gorilla permit is required. It’s essential to book your permit well in advance, as they sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons (June to September). Trek Africa Gorillas can assist you with booking permits and organizing your gorilla safari.

Gorilla Permit Costs: What to Expect

• Uganda:
  • Foreign Non-Residents: $800

  • East African Citizens: $80
  • A gorilla permit gives you access to one hour of gorilla viewing.

For those looking for a longer experience, the Gorilla Habituation Experience is available in Bwindi, where you can spend four hours with the gorillas. This experience costs $1,500.

• Rwanda:
  • Foreign Non-Residents: $1,500
  • Foreign Residents: $500

    • Foreign Non-Residents: $400
    • East African Residents: $200

Remember, the price of the gorilla permit doesn’t include accommodation, transportation or meals, so make sure to check the full details with your tour operator.

Age Limits and Accessibility for Gorilla Trekking

To go gorilla trekking, the minimum age is 15 and while there’s no strict maximum age limit, fitness levels are considered. Older travelers can also participate, with sedan chairs available for hire in Bwindi Forest to assist those who may struggle with the hike. These chairs can be booked in advance or on the day of your trek, at a cost of $400-$500.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policies

Cancellation policies for gorilla permits vary by country. Generally, cancellations within 0-8 days of the trek date are non-refundable. However, due to the pandemic, Uganda has relaxed its policies, offering the option to reschedule your trek if affected by unforeseen circumstances.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

The best time for gorilla trekking is during Uganda’s dry season, from January to February and June to early September. These months offer clearer skies, easier hiking conditions and better visibility of the gorillas, as the vegetation is less dense.
