Gorilla Trekking with a 12-Year-Old

Gorilla Trekking with a 12-Year-Old: A Family Adventure in Uganda

Planning a gorilla safari in Uganda with your 12-year-old child? Exploring the majestic mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park can be an incredible family adventure. While the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s policy currently sets the minimum age for gorilla trekking at 15, there are exceptions and possibilities for children under 15 to experience this unforgettable activity.

Can a 12-Year-Old Trek Gorillas in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking is a thrilling yet challenging experience and the primary reason for the 15-year-old age requirement is the difficulty of the terrain and the safety concerns. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is known for its steep, rough and sometimes slippery trails, which can be physically demanding. Additionally, children under 15 are at higher risk of transmitting contagious diseases, such as flu and cough, which could affect the gorillas due to the genetic similarities between humans and these incredible creatures.

While the general policy is in place, some children may still be allowed to trek, provided they meet certain conditions and are accompanied by their parents for better care and safety. It’s crucial to sign a waiver agreeing that you understand the risks involved.

Important Guidelines for Gorilla Trekking with a 12-Year-Old

When trekking with your 12-year-old, there are a few important considerations:

• Gorilla Permits: Children aged 15 or older pay the same fee for their gorilla trekking permit as adults. If your child is under 15, you’ll need to check the requirements and availability with the Uganda Wildlife Authority. It’s important to note that each gorilla family allows only 8 trekkers per day, so securing a permit early is key.
• Parental Supervision: Your child will likely be grouped with your family for the trek, making it easier for you to manage their safety and comfort. For children under 15, it’s important to ensure that they can handle the demands of the trek, which may be strenuous.
• Waiver: A waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian to acknowledge the risks involved in allowing your child to participate. This legally binding document ensures that you, as a parent, take full responsibility for your child’s safety during the trek.

What to Expect: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi with Kids

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in southwestern Uganda, is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The park is divided into four sectors: Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija and Nkuringo, each offering a unique trekking experience. Bwindi’s lush, rugged terrain is both breathtaking and challenging, with steep slopes and muddy trails, so it’s important to ensure your child is prepared for the hike.

There are several habituated gorilla families that are open for trekking and each family is led by a dominant male known as the Silverback. To take part in the trek, you will need a valid gorilla permit, which is limited to just 8 people per group per day.
