Are you planning a memorable gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda with your 13-year-old child? Visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for an unforgettable wildlife experience is truly special. However, before you embark on this adventure, there are some important details to consider, especially regarding age restrictions and requirements for minors.
Is Gorilla Trekking Allowed for 13-Year-Olds?
While the official policy set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) states that the minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years, it is still possible for children under 15 to go trekking, provided certain conditions are met. The reason for this policy is to ensure that children can handle the trek and the behavior of mountain gorillas, as they may not be able to control their reactions during the experience. For instance, a child might make noise or become frightened, potentially causing the gorillas to act unpredictably. Furthermore, children may be more susceptible to spreading communicable diseases like the flu or cough, which can be passed between humans and gorillas, who share a similar genetic makeup.
Requirements for Gorilla Trekking with a 13-Year-Old
For your 13-year-old to go trekking, a few requirements must be met:
- Gorilla Permit: Like adults, children over the age of 12 pay the same permit fee for gorilla trekking. However, they are typically grouped with their family for easier management.
- Health Considerations: It’s essential to remember that your child’s health must be in good condition. If they are sick or displaying symptoms of communicable diseases, they may not be allowed to trek.
- Parental Waiver: As a parent, you will need to sign a waiver, acknowledging that you understand the risks involved in allowing your child to trek gorillas. This waiver releases the tour operator and Uganda Wildlife Authority from liability in case of any issues during the trek.
- Guided Trekking Experience: Your child will need to follow the guidelines set by the park authorities, which includes maintaining a respectful distance from the gorillas. For safety and preservation reasons, a group of no more than eight visitors is allowed per gorilla family each day.
Where to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda with a 13-Year-Old
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in southwestern Uganda, is one of only two places in the world where you can trek mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. It is home to over half of the remaining mountain gorillas globally, making it a prime location for this unique experience. The park is divided into four trekking sectors: Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija and Nkuringo, each offering different experiences with different gorilla families.
How to Book Gorilla Trekking for a 13-Year-Old
Booking a gorilla trekking experience for you and your 13-year-old is a simple process but it requires some planning:
- Secure Your Gorilla Permit: Gorilla trekking permits are limited, with only eight visitors allowed per gorilla family per day. You must secure your permit in advance, as availability can be limited, especially during peak season.
- Confirm Availability and Dates: If you book a gorilla safari with Trek Africa Gorillas, we will check permit availability for your preferred dates and confirm which sector has open spots for trekking.
- Payment: After confirming availability, you will receive a payment invoice for your gorilla permits. Once payment is made, we will finalize your permits and send you receipts from the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
