Meet the Habituated Gorilla Families in Nkuringo
Nkuringo Gorilla Family (First to Be Habituated)
The Nkuringo Gorilla Family was the first to be habituated in 1997, with the group officially opened for trekking in 2004. Named after the Nkuringo area, which means “hills,” this group initially had 19 members, though the number has since reduced to 12. The group was once led by Rafiki, meaning “friend” in Swahili, until his passing in 2008. Notably, the Nkuringo family was the first to produce a set of twins in 2004, though unfortunately, one of the twins did not survive.
Bushaho Gorilla Family (Added in 2016)
The Bushaho Gorilla Family consists of nine members, though the size may fluctuate as new members are born or added. This family was officially opened for trekking in 2016, contributing to the increasing number of gorilla families in Bwindi. With a total of 17 habituated groups across the park, Uganda remains one of the top destinations for seeing endangered mountain gorillas in the wild.
Christmas Gorilla Family (Named After the Silverback)
The Christmas Gorilla Family is the third habituated group in Nkuringo. This family consists of around nine members, although trekkers commonly see about six individuals, including the dominant silverback named Christmas, one blackback, three females and one infant. This group is known for occasionally venturing into nearby communities in search of food.
