Habituated Gorilla Families in Ruhija Sector

Habituated Gorilla Families in Ruhija Sector: Explore Bwindi’s Eastern Sector

Ruhija, located in the eastern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is a prime destination for gorilla trekking enthusiasts. This region is home to three habituated mountain gorilla families: the Bitukura and Oruzogo families, which are available for tracking and the Kyaguriro family, which is reserved for research. Standing at over 2,350 meters above sea level, Ruhija is the coldest area in Bwindi, offering a refreshing, cool climate, scenic hiking trails and excellent opportunities for nature walks, like the trek to Rwamunyonyi Peak. Other wildlife in the area includes various monkey species, elephants and antelopes.

About the Habituated Mountain Gorilla Families in Ruhija

Bitukura Gorilla Family

Named after a river near where the group was first sighted, the Bitukura family was habituated starting in 2007 and became available for tracking in October 2008. The group is known for its peaceful dynamics, which made the habituation process smoother than for other gorilla families. Initially consisting of 24 members, the group now has 14 members, including 4 silverbacks, 4 adult females, 3 juveniles and 1 infant. The group is led by the calm and peaceful silverback, Ndahura.

Oruzogo Gorilla Family

The Oruzogo family, which first opened for tracking in 2011, is known for its playful nature and high number of members. With 17 members, the group includes 1 silverback, Tibirikwata, 2 blackbacks, 7 females, 2 young adults and 5 infants. Oruzogo’s most famous moment came in 2013 when the family welcomed twins. The name “Oruzogo” is derived from a local plant found near the group’s home, marking the area where the family was first spotted.

Kyaguriro Gorilla Family

The Kyaguriro group, established in 1999, is set aside for research purposes. It was originally composed of 20 members, led by Rukina, the dominant silverback. However, after Rukina’s unfortunate death from a lightning strike, leadership was passed to the younger Mukiza in 2016. This led to internal conflicts, splitting the family into two sub-groups, Kyaguriro A and B. Kyaguriro A is now also known as the Mukiza Gorilla Family.

What to Wear and Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija

Tracking gorillas in Ruhija often involves long, strenuous hikes through steep, muddy terrain and rain is a frequent companion. Be prepared by wearing sturdy, comfortable footwear, thick trousers and a long-sleeve shirt to protect against stinging nettles. It can be chilly when you start, so bringing a sweatshirt or jacket is advisable. Keep in mind that your clothes will likely get muddy, so don’t wear anything you mind getting dirty.

Consider carrying the following items:

• Waterproof daypack
• Rain poncho or raincoat (during rainy seasons)
• Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
• At least 2 liters of water
• Snacks for the hike
• Camera gear (protected in a waterproof bag during rain)
• Binoculars (optional)
• Gardening gloves (for thorny vegetation)

Best Time to Trek Gorillas in Ruhija

Though Ruhija is open year-round, the best times for gorilla trekking are during the drier months, from June to August and December to February. These months see less rainfall, making the terrain easier to navigate. During the rainy seasons (March to May and November), the forest can become slippery but this time offers the advantage of fewer tourists and potential discounts on accommodation.
